My theory about where earworms come from. I came up with this yesterday,

and I'm somewhat proud of myself.

Yesterday I got "Treat Me Nice" (Elvis) in my head. It's still there this morning, even as I type,
("I know that you've been told/It's not fair to tease...")

Anyway, here's my theory: Earworms are old radio waves that are circulating around in the atmosphere. The one I've got may be from when some DJ played the record in the late 1950's, still floating around; it may be from more recent times, when the song was played on an oldies station.

What happens is, the radio waves are floating around, and when they occupy the same space you occupy--there's your earworm.

1. I dunno
You may be right. Earworms for me, lately, have depended on my mood. I can wake up with em, they stick with me through showering, makeup, and all.

Drives me nuts sometimes. And sometimes, paradoxically, they don't always seem to mirror my present situation. Just songs I like. What's that about?

Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. Interesting stuff about music related oddities.
