1. Respond to anything work-related
No matter how capable you think you are, just don’t do it. Any mistake will be instantly explained by the 4am reply time. Besides, alcohol breeds carelessness, and ending an email to an attractive co-worker with a pun on how she’s good at “every job there is” with a winky-face is definitely not a good idea.

2. Chat with family members
Just because your weird step-uncle Dale just got off work from the recycling plant does not mean that it’s the perfect time to organize that trip to insect museum he’s always been bugging you about. This will come back to haunt you in the form of a doorbell ring at 6am the following Sunday.


3. Change your password
Of all the things to forget about the previous night, the fact that your email’s new password is “burgerkingroxxx” is one of the most costly.

1. Oh come on. I did my best work shitfaced in the deep-end of the evening before I stopped drinking.

2. Have I ever mentioned how awesome my family is? Doing this was never a mistake.

3. I did this. My ISP sent me the PW. It was "1loveSabrina". I don't know a Sabrina, but there were more beer bottles in the bathroom than I would have drank and a pair of panties I found later in my computer chair. I guess it was a great night. :shrug: (I still don't know a Sabrina.)

4. I really thought that "Bob's Big Boy" was going to tie the room together.

(This has worked for me. It's bold, clear about intentions, flattering and eliminates the question of "later" problems upfront. Lots of people are up for an occasional rec-fling without baggage. It's all about the execution though.)

Sent a political joke to a colleague who shares my leanings. Unfortunately, there was also a client of ours at the USPS with the same first name, and the mail program thought I meant him. And my perception skills not being 100%, I didn't notice.

Thank God it was a 1) clean 2) relatively benign anti-Bush joke.
