KCET (Los Angeles' local PBS station) going independent...
this is not good news as the article says it will stop showing "Masterpiece" along with some other shows.

this is going to be a sad day.

2. Because that model is working so well for KCSM in San Mateo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KCSM-TV

KCSM-TV is a television station in San Mateo, California, broadcasting locally on digital channel 43 formerly as a PBS member station; it disaffiliated from PBS in July, 2009, in part as a cost-saving measure. It has retained its affiliation with MHz WorldView for programming feeds on its television signals. KCSM is one of the few independent, non-PBS public television stations in the United States, and one of the two non-PBS public television stations in the San Francisco Bay Area (the other is KMTP).

KCSM NEEDS YOUR HELP!
For many years, San Mateo County’s Community College District has brought you KCSM-TV, your local public television station. But recent state budget cuts have put our future in jeopardy. Help us raise one million dollars by January 1st so we can continue to serve you as a member-supported educational public television station.

3. Perhaps this is a chance for KOCE to step up
Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 06:54 PM by KamaAina
which reminds me, KOCE was nearly sold to fundies a few years ago!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=1947940&mesg_id=1947940

That would have put the SOL in SoCal! :scared:

Alternatively, might the cash-strapped L.A. County schools sell off KLCS to some would-be progressive community broadcasters, as, in fact, happened to KOCE itself? (hint: I'm available :-) )

Sorry for the rapid-fire replies, but as you can see, I'am a big-time media geek!
