The physicist proposes to pick the teapot up off the table and put it on the lit burner. The mathematician agrees that this is an acceptable solution -- but proposes, in the best scientific spirit, to improve their understanding of the situation by considering a variant of the problem

This is fine with the physicist, so the mathematician asks: What should we do if the teapot were not on the table, but on the floor?
Well (says the physicist) obviously we ought to pick it up off the floor and put it on the lit burner
Oh, no, no, no! (says the mathematician) there is a more elegant solution!
Is there? (the physicist asks doubtfully)
But, of course! (says the mathematician) Simply pick up the teapot and put it on the table! Then the problem has been reduced to one we already know how to solve!
