Student Banned From Homecoming Event Over Dreadlocks
VICKSBURG, Miss. -- A Vicksburg High School student's dreadlocks could cost him his chance to escort a maid to Friday's homecoming game.

Less than a week before his high school's homecoming festivities, 16-year-old Patrick Richardson said he was told he would have to cut his hair if he wanted to participate in the halftime event.

“I was rejected from homecoming,” Richardson said. “They told me I couldn't escort somebody because I have dreads.”

Look at the picture labeling the video for the story. I thought that kind of hairstyle was called corn rows?

1. As a protest, all of the girls should wear pigtails with little pink bows.
How fucking stupid can a school get? Talk about overt racial discrimination.

Wait, what if all of the white males got their hair done the same way? THEN what would the school do?

2. As long as it's shampooed and clean
I think you should be able to wear your hair any way you like. My little brother tinted his hair green for saint patrick's day, it was wash out dye. He was sent home from school.

4. That's just silly. Not his hair - the sending him home part.

9. It probably will be clean. I had a friend who wore dreadlocks, and
he told me that the notion of dirty dreadlocks is a myth. He said hair 'dreads' better when it is clean.

3. I believe he has both corn rows and dreads.
Look closesly at the ends of the corn rows. It looks to me like he has dreadlocks. Which I love. The school is being stupid and I will be very surprised if they don't get sued.

8. Oh ok, I see it now
There was a very cute guy on the bus the other day with a "jerry garcia band" tshirt and dreads. I thought it was hot.

7. That's disgraceful, what that principal and school have decided
As I understand it, developing dreads is something that takes time, dedication and commitment. Whether or not you - or your frickin school board - agrees with the look or concept, the fact that it takes those qualities says something about an individual. And, of course, prejudice of any kind is reprehensible.

What an idiotic policy. :(
