Anybody watch the new Hawaii 5-0 last night?
Kind of an interesting start - the Steve McGarrett part is a guy who is a former Navy intelligence officer & Navy seal. He's kind of the straight-laced one, while Dann-O is played by Scott Caan (son of James maybe?) and is not as strait-laced, but is not really the comic sidekick, either. Daniel Dae Kim & Grace Park play a disgraced former cop given a second chance, and his younger cousin(?), a soon to be police academy graduate who was a professional surfer.

Thankfully, they kept the theme song from the original.

Not a bad show for the first one.

3. Thanks
and, they have eye candy for everybody - Grace Park for the men & gay women, and Alex O'Loughlin (McGarrett) for the women & gay men. Park's opening scene was her in a bikini, and they later had a scene with O'Loughlin taking off his shirt to show off his six-pack abs.

4. just in passing- lots of quick cuts - I guess they did some of that in the
original show. Looked a bit too much like all those CSI shows...

5. Scott is James Caan's son...
I watched a little of the show, and I wasn't impressed. I have to say, though, that I grew up watching the original. Jack Lord had a huge screen presence, and that will make it difficult for anyone to try and fill his shoes. I guess younger people who have never seen the original might like this version of the show.

7. I don't remember the original
Other than the theme song and "book 'em dano"

Alex O'Loughlin is intense, but didn't project a commanding screen presence, IMO.

14. That's kind of my problem
I liked the original, and I'm skeptical about how well this one will go. I think that there is too much copying in TV now--there isn't a lot to stand out in this version. I also think writers and producers need to create their own shows, and not "remake" a title. It's lousy when the remake doesn't live up to the potential of the old show, which lasted, believe it or not, 12 years, 1968-1980.

20. there's no one who has "Jack Lord" hair
to make that dramatic "turn & face the camera" in the opening theme song, which imo, is the coolest TV opener ever.

6. I'm not sure about this show
I did watch it but I have a problem with casting an Australian to play McGarrett. I guess they couldn't find anybody from the states to play a clearly American character? Then there's the part played by Grace Park, in the original show it was a guy. If they were going to make that many changes to the show why bother calling it Hawaii 50.

9. They said that about Battlestar Galactica, too
when they cast a woman as Starbuck, a role originally played by Dirk Benedict.

15. Exactly!
It might have been criticized less if they only made it their own show, and not based on the old show.

BTW, Simon Baker, who stars in The Mentalist, is Australian, too. It seems some of these Aussies (and Kiwis, too!) are able to do the American accent better than we can do theirs. ;)

27. Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) is an Aussie, too.
The guy's really good with accents. He also played Daphne's hilariously obnoxious Cockney brother on Frasier.

13. I did a short review last night elsewhere (FB)
and I had one complaint for which someone kind of dissed my opinion.

I like Daniel Dae Kim, but I felt we were robbed by making Kono a woman, and having another slim detective as Chin Ho. I thought we needed another teddy bear type guy, like a Samoan for Chin. I did make the comment (for which I assume I was blasted) in saying we needed someone Chinese instead of Korean fir the part.

It seems sometimes that producers and writers now give a woman a major cast role, even when it's not necessary--I AM a feminist, yes, and I know women make up a larger part of the workforce, but sometimes I think it's overdone. JMHO on this issue.

I'll watch it for awhile, I suppose, just as long as nothing else is in that time slot that I'll enjoy more--Lawrence O'Donnell has an excellent chance to make me a regular.

28. Well, they can always bring in Duke or Ben Kokua later.
I liked it. I was a big fan of the original, and I was grateful to see they're at least showing that classic some respect. (Particularly enjoyed seeing McGarrett's original Mercury return! I hope we actually get to see it in action.)

The cast was good, and they have a lot of chemistry together. Alex O'Loughlin is no Jack Lord, but who is? Over time, he'll grow into his character.

Overall, this one has me intrigued. I'll stick around for a while.

16. I watched it for about 5 minutes...
....before I had to admit "This just ain't Hawaii 5-0."

There's no way they can capture how cool and how uncool this show was back in the day. All new characters might've been better, but then what's the point, right?

And, of course:
Kam Fong as Chin Ho. Zulu as Kono.
Kam Fong as Chin Ho. Zulu as Kono.
Kam Fong as Chin Ho. Zulu as Kono.
Repeat as necessary.

"Hawai'i 5-0 ... Saimin is a food, not a bad guy. Kalakaua is a street here, but PUH LEEZE learn how to pronounce it!..."

25. And the governor giving McGarrett a blanket pardon for
Anything he might do in the course of his investigations. Wonder if they will turn it into "Hawaii 24" and let him pick up where Jack Bauer left off?

If so, that will be a shame. The casting looks interesting and I like some of the interpersonal tensions they have set up.

26. There wasn't a moment in the show that wasn't completely preposterous and contrived.
It made CSI Miami look like a model of realism. God, network scripted television is horrible! House blew too.
