"FREEBIRD!" - funny story about that.
I've been yelling that at bands for 30 years now and so far only ONE musician has even attempted it. He did pretty well and then abruptly stopped and said, "shit, I forgot the changes after that."

ANYWAY, my favorite local performer is Sherri Mullen (sherrimullen.com - yes, she's cute but she's also married). Her new CD (fourth) has a song called "You Sure Act Different When You're Wasted" and one of the lines is "now he's yelling Freebird at the band, indignant as hell when we don't understand...cause now he wants to party...no longer mellow Marty".

And no, she doesn't know Freebird. I've asked. She calls my three daughters her "peeps" - they've been going to see her for ten years now.

1. The funniest one I ever heard was when I went to a sing-along showing of "The Sound of Music" and
at the part where Maria picks up a guitar to sing "Do-Re-Mi" someone yelled out "Freebird!" Hilarious.

5. You have to be familiar with older Genesis (Peter Gabriel years) to appreciate this one...
There's a tribute band called Musical Box that is the ONLY band endorsed by all current and former members of Genesis. At the "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" concert in Harrisburg, PA, they performed the entire tour as it was originally presented in 1974, including all of the slides for the 3-screen display. There are no words to describe the awesomeness of that event. When they came back on stage for an encore, the lead singer asked what they should do. That was a PERFECT moment for someone to yell "FREEBIRD!", but no, in a silent room, someone yelled, "SUPPER'S READY!"

The entire place exploded in laughter, including the band. They did "Watcher of the Skies" instead. Two years later, they did the "Selling England By the Pound" tour and for an encore, yes, they did "Supper's Ready" - complete with costumes, as they do with all of their songs.

2. I've told THIS "Freebird Story" before on here...
.

...but back when I had my band, we ended up with songs that would
give one of the bandmembers a break to go to the bathroom, get
another drink, talk to a particularly hot grou... um... do important
stuff.
.
. We were an all-original band (did 3 covers eventually), so
it was COMPLETELY inappropriate for me to hide in the crowd during
MY break and shout out again and again for "Freebird".
.
. Got away with it for months before one of the other guys caught me.

3. Drive By Truckers - Days of Graduation
Bobby went out for a joy ride with my best girl
Left me at the party,
He was my best friend and I miss him.
It was almost June and the ¾ moon illuminated the rain-soaked streets like a candy wrapper.
I guess that's why Bobby had his lights off,
Tear-assing threw the back part of town and those deserted country roads where me and Bobby tear-assed so many times before.
Sometimes with my best girl and sometimes Bobby had him one too.

But this night he banked that curve just a little too hard and that 442 went airborne,
Hit a telephone pole and split in two, Bobby's skull was split right in two,
And my girl was pinned in her seat, partially embedded in the dashboard
And for the next twenty minutes the only sound in the night were her screams.
And the sound of the wheel still spinning.

In a little while the ambulance came and the sound of its siren mixed with the screaming girl and the spinning wheel.

But when the story was told the next day at the graduation ceremony,
Everyone said that when the ambulance came
The paramedics could hear "Free Bird" still playing on the stereo.

You know it's a very long song

6. "Dude, wait, what?"
Curiously, I had my electric out last night and was trying to play it. I didn't get very far and went back to "Puff the Magic Dragon".
