I'd like to start a serious lounge discussion.
Here's a hypothetical situation.

Let's say that you met a person in real life that you knew you would have occasional contact with for a very long time. For the sake of this discussion, it does not matter if the person is a man or a woman.

For the sake of this discussion, let's assume that this person had a very outgoing physical or mental presence. If you have ever met the CEO of a large company...that type of presence. The person may or may not be a nice person, but they have a certain quality that makes people take notice. They are the type of person that commands your attention without saying a word, and you are compelled to look them in the eye when you speak to them. Note: I am not this type of person...this is just for discussion.

Now, let's say that you also had the opportunity to "meet" this person in an online setting only. You know their credentials, you've seen their picture. You know their writing style. The only difference between this situation and the real life situation above is that here, even though you will communicate daily with this person online, they will never know your real identity.

My question is this: Would you treat the "real life" individual any differently than the "online" individual? Would you speak to them any differently? To what degree? You know what I am getting at here... Do you have the fortitude to treat an online individual the same way you would treat a real life individual...whether it be in a positive or negative manner. Think about it...

1. An interesting question.
The answer is "yes, I'd treat them differently."

I'm not speaking from hypothetical. My mother's boss is the sort of guy you describe and we're Facebook friends. He's a neo-conservative. He posts dumb shit on my wall and I say "F*ck you, Dick!" (That's his name: Dick.)

I'd never say "F*ck You" to Dick to his face. He's a Marine, an officer and was a scout in Vietnam. He killed people with a knife. He's almost 70 and kind of scares me...I don't scare easy.

5. Since he knows you and your mom...
and you would not say "fuck you" to his face, are you not afraid that he would confront you in real life for your online comment?

9. Not really.
I live hundreds of miles away and he blows over quickly. He refers to me as her commie son. (Note: I'm not a communist.) I think he does it to get a rise out of me.

3. I would probably treat them differently.
Just like in rush hour traffic, some screws up and cuts you off,you give them finger. You'd never do that in a movie line up. Because you never have to face them,I think.

6. Well I think IRL we have a lot more patience for folks.
IRL I'd have to be pretty angry to do that. It seems so much easier online.

10. No, how nasty would you get online?
BTW...I think you are one of the gentlest people here. But I'm wondering, if you really got pissed off online, how far would you go?

13. I'd treat them differently.
I'm not confrontational online. If someone online annoys me, I usually ignore them

In real life, if someone annoys me and ignoring them isn't an option, I'll tell them what I think in no uncertain terms.
