Poll question: You have a choice! Whattaburger or In-N-Out?

What be your burger, ye?

And this is not a referendum on which burger is best - because we all know that would be Kirk's in South Bay Area, CA.

my backyard grill. :9

Why would I eat a substandard burger from somewhere else?

Because I make the greatest burger on my grill.

See? This is why we have to limit it to mass consumption

17. I feel ignored up in PA. Not that there is much in way of chains here.
McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys. I have a little bar close by with the best burgers, and real french fries---just like mom made. So who wants to go to other places, especially when I can have a beer there.

8. After hearing people absolutely RAVE RAVE RAVE about In-and-Out burgers...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
...for YEARS, I finally had a chance to sample these legendary meatfellas
when I drove to a radio conference around San Mateo (BEAUTIFUL!!!)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Meh.
.
.
.
They were... ... ... kinda OK.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
However, I wonder how the hell something as tasteless as Whataburger
survives in this country. Truly puzzling.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
For a fastfood burger, I don't think you can beat Carl's Jr. 6 Dollar Burger.
.
Comes closest (while still far apace) to what comes off my grill.

24. Agreed, with one difference
The Carls Jr "big hamburger" which occasionally sells for a dollar is actually a far superior burger to the 6 dollar, taste wise(purely speaking of the meat involved). If they were to offer it with the sizing and topping choices of the many 6 dollar variants, it would be one of the best things they had ever done. To my way of thinking, at least.

beats them and all others, including your own backyard grilling efforts.

25. Which one you been eating at?
I gotta differ with you on this one. Burgerville should stick to shakes and fried items of local origin. These are areas where they excel, unlike their burgers. I have partaken in copious amounts of virtually every fast food joint available in the greater Portland area, and of them all, Burgerville burgers are superior only to McDonald's. All others have been superior.

28. hmm. Wonder if they're doing something different down there
Ive eaten at 5 separate locations in Portland, and every time the burger has been blah. Way over greasy, Bun a bit stale and un noteworthy, and meat flavor blah, verging on a tiny bit unpleasant. Plus moderately pricey.

10. Kirk's is too fucking expensive, period.
If I go to Safeway and get the same quality ingredients I can make TWO "Steakburgers" for the price of one at Kirk's.

There's no way to justify the price unless the burgers are dipped in 24K gold.

They are not.

Plus the restaurants are toilets. The one on Bascom was the filthiest place I've been to in a long time. They leveled it to the ground and built a brand new restaurant where the old one was standing and a couple of weeks after it opened it was just as filthy as the old one.

13. Aw come on - they're CHARCOAL GRILLED!
Takes at least a few hours to fire up a charcoal grill at home, and have all the condiments, and those fry/ring thingys...

Yeah they cost, but for a treat, they're worth it...

And if you feel like low-balling it for the same thing, there's Red Tractor :)

12. Whataburger hands down
not only do they taste great, the company pulled all of its ads off any station/network that showed the Swiftboat Liars propaganda in 2004, but it also supports local charities AND this week, my local Whataburger provided food & cold drinks to waiters/chefs/bartenders striking their employer (another restaurant obviously) because they had not been paid.

Suppose it was asking too much for anyone on DU to appreciate a business that goes out of its way to support striking workers (& btw, you only got the free burger if you showed up at the restaurant dressed in orange....Whataburger took to food & drinks to the strikers)

26. Thats pretty cool.
I have heard that in-n-out has a decent name, paying workers more than they have too. They also put bible verses on the food wrappers. I dunno what to make of that.

Either way, they both seem far better than Burger king squelching workers over a few cents on tomatoes.

32. Whataburger is still a privately-held company
owned by the same family of the man who started it back when all he had was a trailer to sell burgers from (my dad was an original customer). They have "one nation under God" posters in their stores, but they have made it clear that they don't get involved in political arguments.

They were decent to work for when I was in high school. I don't know what they pay now, of course, but they seem to hang on to employees a lot longer than other fast food joints.

44. As I understand it, so is in-n-out
Its being delivered in parts to the year old grandchild of the founders following the passing of the original owners in 06.

I stand by what I said earlier. Either one seems far superior to McDonalds

20. I've been feeling like In-and-Out quality has declined in recent years,
but that could just be early-onset geezerhood skewing my perceptions of the good ol' days. However, although I do have fond memories of Whataburger I haven't had one in a decade, so I'm still going to vote for the local contender.

I did just hear that Five Guys has come to California, and I think east coasters speak highly of them so perhaps there'll be some tough competition out here in the future....

33. Mother-in-law raves about Whattaburger
Find out there is one about 45 minutes from here so we all load up and take a road trip. She spends thirty minutes telling us about these great hamburgers we are going to experience, heavenly onion rings (made with real onions, imagine that). We get there and my youngest daughter who is 9 says "You have got to be kidding, right?" Grandma is sitting at the table with her eyes rolled back in her head and ends up eating her burger and mine.
