Woodstock Fantasy Thread...give me a list of 10 bands that would perform at your ULTIMATE festival.
Consider it a "Holodeck" kind of thing...it can be ANY ten bands, regardless of whether they are still together, still living...if you could gather TEN musical acts, either solo performers or bands, who would you pick?

Here's mine (NOT in order of appearance):

1). Neil Young & Crazy Horse (with Danny Whitten, the "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" era)
2). Allman Brothers (the original, with Duane & Berry)
3). Grateful Dead (the "Skull & Roses" / "Europe 72" era, while Pigpen was still on board and Godchaux had just joined)
4). The Band (the Rock of Ages-era)
5). The Byrds (original lineup with Crosby)
6). Jefferson Airplane (The "Surrealistic Pillow" lineup)
7). Quicksilver Messenger Service (the original, WITHOUT Dino Valente)
8). King Crimson (The Fripp / Wetton / Bruford / Cross edition)
9). Genesis (The Collins / Banks / Rutherford / Hackett lineup from "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering")
10. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

13. He was the heart of the group, and for many years, the glue that held the unstable group together
"voice of an angel" as it states on his headstone.

Most people think the BB's were just a surf band. Alot of people don't know how much turmoil went on on a constant basis, infighting, trying to gain control of the band, lawsuits galore, etc. Poor Carl, many times he seemed to be the only one who had any sense.

I think Sunflower and Surf's Up are their best work. The song Surf's Up is a work of art. (can you tell I am a huge fan? LOL)

19. Heroes And Villains: The True Story Of The Beach Boys by Steven Gaines
I've read this book...several times, actually...and it is acknowledged as the real deal, not a "hatchet job"...it acknowledges the light and dark in the lives of the band and its individual members.

It's fascinating...it takes you inside the ill-fated "Smile" sessions, the relationship between Dennis and the Manson family (they break into his house and rearrange his furniture, just to let him know they can "get to him at any time"), Mike Love's yin/yang balance of transcendental meditation and wife beating, the relationship between Dennis and Mike Love when Dennis marries and has a baby with Love's daughter...it's a 50-50 split between the mechanics of touring and recording and their personal lives.

5 stars all the way, one of my highest recommendations.

It is a whole lot better than that mess of a book "Wouldn't It Be Nice", Brian's supposed autobio, what a train wreck this book is, clearly ghost written by Eugene Landy, caused many a lawsuit by Carl, their mom Audree, and others.

As the story goes...
Paul McCartney was so impressed with the album that it is said to have inspired the Beatles to raise their game. The result was Sgt. Peppers.

24. I'd like to see the Cale-era Velvets on a night where Lou actually had something to lose.
The "reunion?" Talk about a sleepwalk.

But Reed and Cale have both had Velvets-level intensity in their solo careers...they just couldn't muster it when they got back together. Cale was able to summon that energy on his own. Reed needed a superior musician who wasn't intimidated by him to kick his ass, like the late, great Bob Quine.

Dear GOD, would THAT have been something...The "Blue Mask" era Reed, with Quine along for the ride, reunited with Cale and Tucker and Morrison. Pretty much every review of "Blue Mask" called it "his best work since the Velvets," and it was true...that boy was howlin' at the MOON.

My personal choice for the original band would be the White Light-White Heat era (couldn't handle hearing them without hearing "Sister Ray"), with a big dose of the first album thrown in, ESPECIALLY "Venus In Furs," probably my all-time favorite Velvets track.

In this order:

2. Yes
3. David Bowie + David Byrne + Philip Glass doing something together
4. Allman Brothers
5. Led Zeppelin
6. Frank Zappa
7. Bill Hicks
8. Jethro Tull
9. Rush
10. Pink Floyd

I know Bill Hicks isn't a band, but dammit, it's my super-bitchin' concert, and I want everyone to have to listen to the best prophet the last half of the 20th century gave us.

32. I listen to Jimi's acoustic "Hear My Train A Comin'"...
...from the "Jimi Hendrix" film, and wonder what he could have done with a vocalist of Joni's caliber. He was always searching, looking for a life outside of that "Foxey Lady" box...Joni's "Hejira," one of my favorite albums, is a moody, intense, rich excursion....largely because of her excellent taste in partnering with Jaco Pastorious. Think about Jimi's poetry: "Way down by the Methane Sea, I have a hummingbird and it hums so loud, you'd think you were losing your mind"...just imagine what the hell a Hendrix / Mitchell collaboration could have sounded like.

33. Here's another thought along those lines
Plant & Page were very big Joni Mitchell fans, and the song "Battle of Evermore" on the 4th album had originally been (so I've read) conceived as a duet for Plant & Mitchell. However, due to scheduling/record label issues, Zep ended up recording the song with English folk singer Sandy Denny.

Joni & Jimi played at Woodstock.

That's why I grouped those three.

34. Yeah, there's the Plant & Krauss album, and in the new Rolling Stone...
...Plant is talking about how his new solo album is the follow-up to Led Zeppelin III he always wanted to make.

I was a fan of the "indelible riff" songs Led Zeppelin cranked out like "Heartbreaker" and "Whole Lotta Love," but I always thought the melodic, moody stuff like "Rain Song" represented their best. And no one does "melodic and moody" like Joni.

23. If there was ever anyone who needed to get back to where he once belonged, it's Carlos...
...seriously. It's time for him to follow in the footsteps of Cheap Trick and others who devote one night to performing one classic album, front to back.

For years, I enjoyed the balance of chart-seeking pop and "downed power line" insane jazz-fusion jamming, and in the end, "Supernatural" and "Smooth" pretty much killed my taste for the pop.

HOW COOL would it be if Santana took a week and had an "Abraxas Night," a "Santana III" night...and...dare we dream...A LOTUS NIGHT??? And each of these nights with not a single trace of "Smooth?"

It's all good, for the most part, but...I mean, LOTUS...

29. No, I didn't forget..."Caravanserai," "Welcome," "Swing Of Delight"...
...it's a well-known fact that Santana's "comeback" album "Supernatural" was the result of Clive Davis making phone calls and calling in favors.

And for those of us who were (and are) Santana fans, the reaction was "how can you have a "comeback" album if he never went away?"

Nothing wrong with selling records, but there are times in Santana's career where that was his primary focus, and the music came later. I'd be up for hearing any full album performed in which the opposite was the case.

37. You Mean Like This? Santana at Woodstock
Edited on Mon Jul-26-10 10:08 PM by Steely_Dan
To this day, I consider this performance among the best LIVE performances ever by any band, anywhere at anytime (IMHO). You have to watch the whole thing. It seems that everyone gives everything they have until they are completely spent. Listen how the song peaks, drops off and peaks again at the end. THIS was Santana, raw but controlled.

I had the honor of speaking with Michael Shrieve about a year ago. We exchanged emails for a couple of days. I was so impressed with how young he was to be holding down a trap set in a band that is already percussion based. What kind of pressure did he face at (I believe only 19) to drum in such a band at such a place.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLDalZ4-53g

Of course, there is the famous story regarding this performance concerning Carlos' condition. Apparently they had to go on much earlier than they had expected. Carlos had just dropped some acid and was beginning to peak when they had to take the stage. Carlos recalled many times in many interviews that the neck of his guitar was like a snake that he couldn't control. I think he controlled it just fine, sir.

Ladies and gentlemen, Soul Sacrifice.

Enjoy.

39. Yep, like that.
"Lotus" is probably my personal favorite, and he never really lost me until "Supernatural."

I also wasn't a fan of the "Zebop!" period because, for my tastes, Alexander J. Ligertwood was the most annoying, grating vocalist ever to be in the band.

Selected tracks along the way were OK, but I'd have to say that Moonflower (1977) was his last great ALBUM.

21. I just added the "Layla" 3-CD Anniversary set to iTunes today...
I can only imagine what the band...WITH Duane...would have sounded like in concert. The "official" D&TD live albums isn't that great because of Clapton's heavy descent into self-medication at the time...a few tunes catch fire but for the most part it is forced and sluggish.
