Alright...I DID try to watch a soccer game today
I think the thing ended at around 4-4:30 but it was Chile vs. Spain and for the last thirteen ( yes, thirteen ) minutes of the game, Spain, who was ahead just kicked the ball around for what seemed to be an eternity....fans were walking out, apparently bored or whatever ( I don't know the things that go through a soccer fans mind ). Spain, surprisingly won the game....I couldn't believe my eyes

This is the very first soccer game I have watched in its entirety, simply because I was curious as to what the fascination with this game was all about; was I ever disappointed! This was like watching tennis only with more players, a bigger field, the ball was moved with your feet and head, rather than with a racket, and there are actually SCORES in tennis

so I figure there is something else I'm missing here...anyone?

1. This should have been your first game.

Some games are boring..Others aren't so much.

2. I'm unlucky that way, Sky...but then again, I can't stand watching ( or playing ) poker
and that is televised regularly. I will look at this link now, thanks :)

3. Bingo! You've just identified why soccer will never be a
big spectator sport in the US. We just don't have the patience, or attention span, or whatever, to stay rapt through any game that usually as scores in the LOW single digits.

Not that I like to watch soccer or any other sport on TV...I'm agreeing with you here.

4. Good God. Poker on TV is like golf on the radio. Just too painful
to endure. Who the HELL wants to watch a bunch of people play CARDS, fer Chrissake?

7. Once a week my roommates and several of their friends get together to play poker
they are constantly trying to get me to play, and I have absolutely ZERO interest in the game ( or most card games for that matter ) I sat through a game once, just observing, and my fucking GOD is it the most boring-ass thing I have ever had to sit through!!! almost as bad as this soccer game this afternoon! And the other guys look at me like I'm some kind of freak because, you know..ALL guys are somehow SUPPOSED to fucking love poker!!! it's in our fucking genes, Redstone :sarcasm:

To me, there is nothing more boring than sitting around a table staring at people and trying to bluff them....it reminds me of some psych sessions from high school, where everyone it just STARING at everyone else, wondering what the fuck they are thinking and are they going to get shanked after the session is over

God I fucking hate poker...guess I'm not a man, huh Redstone? :D

Hey, I know I keep bugging the shit out of you but we got to get together sometime!

6. Spain needed a win to take the group..
they were already up 2-1 and didn't need to score. So they were wasting some time and making sure Chile didn't score. How is that different from an NFL team running out the clock?

8. I don't care for NFL either, but Chile didn't seem to mind the loss in this game
for whatever reason...I just don't care for the game and find it boring

Okay?

9. That's because Chile
even with the loss, still finished second....enough to move on.

For someone who has decided the game is "boring" you sure don't know much about it..

10. Well, I don't CARE to know much about it, see? Are you looking for some kind of conflict here?
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 08:43 PM by TK421
or are you always a douche?

edited to add: I thought I made it damn clear in the OP I thought this game was boring, and didn't give any indication of watching another one...do you take personal offense to that?

Could it be, perhaps I am talking to a professional soccer player here? because I just can't see anyone else who could be offended by comments like this

it is a fucking game, and a boring one at that ( at least, my opinion) don't like my opinion? Go to another thread! :hi:

11. Whatever
I originally replied to your OP in good faith pointing out why Spain was making no real attempt to score. However, you apparently have such a burr under your ass about soccer that you feel the need to haul out the insults. I'll refrain from doing the same and wish you a good day..

16. Soccer/Futbol is an amazing sport.....period
TK421 why aren't you at your post!

Speaking of posts this is my first here @ Democratic Underground, ya ya!
I've been an off and on reader and decided it was time to start participating.
I apologize for waiting so long to get involved.

Why are you knocking a sport that everyone the world round can play. What other sport can anyone spend so little on. All you need is a ball that's it or a friend with a ball. Tennis requires a ball and a tennis racket and a net, not to mention the perfectly smooth surface to play on. That's the beauty of futbol, sorry I keep calling futbol because your first experience was with Spanish speaking teams, I thought it was appropriate.

It's a bummer that you watched a match where just like any other sport at the end of the game the team with the most points tries to "burn time".

The skill and dynamics of ball play is incredible to watch. Pick up a soccer ball and try and juggle it with just your feet. Then have a friend kick the ball to you and you with one kick return it to him perfectly. These futbol players have incredible skills.

You should try playing it it's an incredible amount of fun and it's great exercise with all the running.

17. Welcome to DU! I'm afraid I gave this game every chance it had FranknThoughts
it just didn't appeal to me...the flow of it, I mean

The last thirteen minutes they just kicked the fucking ball around to each other...torturous to watch....MARQUIS DE SADE torturous to watch. I was just waiting for the damn game to end..knowing Chile would lose anyway.

No excitement for me at all...maybe a little when someone got the ball close to the net and actually SCORED A FUCKING POINT....sorry....it seemed slow-moving to me
