Shutter Island -- SPOILER
For those who saw it, at the end, did he intentionally pretend to go into regression so he could punish himself with a lobotomy?

2. The doctor sitting on the steps knew it, didn't he?
That was a little bit of forced artwork having the orderlies coming to get him with the lobotomy tools hidden under the towels.

9. He did.
They could cure him of his delusion but not his guilt.

4. If the movie ended that way, they changed it from the book

In the book he genuinely lapses back into insanity, iirc.

6. Yes- he was finally sane, and decided NOT to live with his pain.
The lobotomy wasn't punisment to him, it was ESCAPE.(imho)

Just finally got around to seeing that film about 4 hours ago.
Enjoyed it greatly.
