Post some great songs about rivers.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx1irqElF_s

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Way down upon Sycamore Slough
A white man sings the blues
selling roses of paper maché (note 1)
with flecks of starlight dew
I swiped a bunch and threw it your way
where hazy moonlight glowed
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

Way down upon Shadowfall Ward
End of the avenue
Run, hide, seek in your own backyard
Mama's backyard won't do
All night long I sang Love's Sweet Song
down where the water flowed
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

Moonlight wails as hound dogs bay
but never quite catch the tune
Stars fall down in buckets like rain
till there ain't no standing room
Bright blue boxcars train by train
clatter where dreams unfold
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

Way down upon Seminole Square
belly of the river tide
call for me and I will be there
for the price of a taxi ride
Night double-clutches into today
like a truck downshifting its load
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

Thread the needle
right through the eye
The thread that runs so true
All the others I let pass by
I only wanted you
Never cared for careless love
but how your bright eyes glowed
Way down, down along Lazy River Road

13. Up On Cripple Creek – The Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDnlU6rPfwY

When I get off of this mountain
You know where I want to go
Straight down the Mississippi river
To the Gulf of Mexico

To Lake Charles, Louisiana
Little Bessie, girl that I once knew
And she told me just to come on by
If there's anything she could do

Refrain:
Up on Cripple Creek she sends me
If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one

Good luck had just stung me
To the race track I did go
She bet on one horse to win
And I bet on another to show

Odds were in my favor
I had him five to one
When that nag to win came around the track
Sure enough he had won

{Refrain}

I took up all of my winnings
And I gave my little Bessie half
And she tore it up and blew it in my face
Just for a laugh

Now there's one thing in the whole wide world
I sure would like to see
That's when that little love of mine
Dips her doughnut in my tea

{Refrain}

Now me and my mate were back at the shack
We had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings
But I love to hear him talk"

Now that just gave my heart a fall
To the bottom of my feet
And I swore as I took another pour
My Bessie can't be beat

{Refrain}

Now, there's a flood out in California
And up north it's freezing cold
And this living off the road
Is getting pretty old

So I guess I'll call up my big mama
Tell her I'll be rolling in
But you know, deep down, I'm kinda tempted
To go and see my Bessie again

{Refrain}

15. Blood Red River - Beth Orton
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 11:39 PM by S n o w b a l l
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De_PBVuJepw

Beth Orton Blood Red River

Took a friend I found
Across some blood red river
Never did find my way home
In time to forgive her
Why must people always want what they can't have?
Why must people always grab what they'd never grasp?
How did we get so far?
How do we move so fast away
From the lilac-lilied lake
I'm sure we used to play
Is it only a dream away?
Took a raft I found
Across some blood red river
Never did find my way home
In time for my dinner
Why must people always want what they never have?
Why is it a crime to miss a part of you that's bled?
How did we get so far?
How do we move so fast away
From the lilac-lilied lake
I'm sure we used to play
Is it only a dream away?
Only a dream away
Lost a friend
I found down some blood red river
Never did find my way home
In time to forget her
Why must people always want what they can't have?
Why must people always take, but forget to ask?
How do we get so far?
How do we move so fast away
From the lilac lilied lake
Where I'm sure where we used to play
Is it only a dream away?
Only a dream away

95. +1 for Cahoots
I love all their albums; even the relatively obscure ones like Islands and Northern Lights Southern Cross. I was fortunate enough to see them with Bob Dylan in 1974 and saw Levon Helm again in the 80's with the RCO AllStars.......if you're a Band fan, which it appears you are, I read Levon's autobiography, This Wheel's on Fire, last year, and I think you might enjoy it.

100. Cool! However, I'm pretty far behind on my reading of late.
That may have something to do with me being here. Just maybe.

A long, long time ago I joined one of those CD clubs, like they used to have book clubs and VHS clubs. It was a deal where you get 11 CDs up front for a penny and then agree to buy ten more over the next two years; something like that. And I chose as one of those initial offerings a boxed set by The Band, which included Cahoots, Big Pink, Rock of Ages and an untitled one which I always thought was their debut (it has Cripple Creek and TNTDODD and so on). I took it because it was four CD's for the price of one, effectively, and I had already known of several tunes by the Band. I gained a real appreciation for the Band after listening to them once; listening to them several times made me love them.

They were so, so damn... REAL. I think by far the best American band of their time, and their time was a very, very good time for music!

of Southern Culture ( shhh...don't let the guys at the bowling alley know I'm a closet inter-lectural).....Incredible stuff on there; about 27 songs in a wide variety of styles, and this was either the last or next to last song on it....And Oh Brother Where Art Thou is one of my favorite movies of all time .

24. Dominick The Italian Christmas Donkey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQrdxtWgHbE

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Santa's got a little friend,
his name is Dominick.
The cutest little donkey,
you never see him kick.
When Santa visits his paisans,
with Dominick he'll be.
Because the reindeer cannot
climb the hills of Italy.

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Jingle bells around his feet,
and presents on the sled.
Hey! Look at the mayor's derby,
on top of Dominick's head.
A pair of shoes for Louie,
snd a dress for Josephine.
The labels on the inside says,
they're made in Bruccalin'. (Brooklyn)

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)

Children sing, and clap their hands,
And Dominick starts to dance.
They talk Italian to him,
And he even understands.
Cummare's and cumpare's
Do the dance 'a tarantell',
When Santa Nicola comes to town,
And brings 'o ciucciarell.'

Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)
Hey! Dominick! Buonn Natale!

(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)

Drifting with the current down a moonlit stream,
While above the heavens in their glory gleam,

Twinkle in the sky,
Seeming in a paradise of love divine,
Dreaming of a pair of eyes that looked in mine.
Beautiful Ohio, in dreams again I see
Visons of what used to be.

48. Sweet Thames Flow Softly, by Ewan MacColl
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 01:22 AM by LeftishBrit
I met my girl at Woolwich Pier

Beneath the big cranes standing

And oh, the love I felt for her

It passed all understanding

Took her sailing on the river

Flow sweet river, flow

London town was mine to give her

Sweet Thames flow softly

Made the Thames into a crown

Flow sweet river, flow

Made a brooch of Silver town

Sweet Thames flow softly

At London Yard I held her hand

At Blackwall Point I faced her

At the Isle of Dogs I kissed her mouth

And tenderly embraced her

Heard the bells of Greenwich ringing, Flow . . .

All the time I had was singing, Sweet Thames . . .

Lighthouse Reach I gave her there, Flow . . .

As a ribbon for her hair, Sweet Thames . . .

From Putney Bridge to Nine Elms Reach

We cheek to cheek were dancing

Her necklace made of London Bridge

Her beauty was enhancing

Kissed her once again at Wapping, Flow . . .

After that there was no stopping, Sweet Thames . . .

Gave her Hampton Court to twist, Flow . . .

Into a bracelet for her wrist, Sweet Thames . . .

But now alas the tide has changed

My love she has gone from me

And winter's frost has touched my heart

And put a blight upon me

Creeping fog is on the river, Flow . . .

Sun and moon and stars gone with her, Sweet Thames . . .

Swift the Thames runs to the sea, Flow sweet river flow,

Bearing ships and part of me, Sweet Thames flow softly.

See my baby, tell her, Tell her hurry home
Had no lovin', since my baby been gone
See my baby, Tell hurry on home
I ain't had, Lord, my right mind, Since my rider's been gone

Hey, she promises, She's my rider
I wanna tell you, She's my rider
I know you're mine, She's my rider
She ain't but sixteen, But she's my rider

I'm goin' to Rosedale, Take my rider by side
Anybody argue with me man, I'll keep them satisfied
Well, see my baby, tell her, Tell her the shape I'm in
Ain't had no lovin', Lord, since you know when

Spoken: Why don't you come into my kitchen

She's a kindhearted lady. She studies evil all the time
She's a kindhearted woman. She studies evil all the time

Squeeze my lemon 'til the juice runs down my leg
Squeeze it so hard, I'll fall right out of bed
Squeeze my lemon, 'til the juice runs down my leg

I wonder if you know what I'm talkin' about

Oh, but the way that you squeeze it girl
I swear I'm gonna fall right out of bed

She's a good rider
She's my kindhearted lady
I'm gonna take my rider by my side
I said her front teeth are lined with gold
She's gotta mortgage on my body, got a lien on my soul
She's my brownskin sugar plum...

The Danube is known as the Donau in Austria, where Johann Strauss lived.
The full title as translated from the German is "On the Beautiful Blue Danube"

I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the River Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, muggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin', oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM6fDpWdkyY

Let's put our heads together and start a new country up
Our father's father's father tried, erased the parts he didn't like
Let's try to fill it in, bank the quarry river, swim
We knee-skinned it you and me, we knee-skinned that river red

This is where we walked, this is where we swam
Take a picture here, take a souvenir
This land is the land of ours, this river runs red over it
We knee-skinned it you and me, we knee-skinned that river red

And we gathered up our friends, bank the quarry river, swim
We knee-skinned it you and me, underneath the river bed
This is where we walked, this is where we swam
Take a picture here, take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone
Let's put our heads together, start a new country up,
Underneath the river bed we burned the river down.
This is where they walked, swam, hunted, danced and sang,
Take a picture here, take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone
Rewrite the book and rule the pages, saving face, secured in faith
Bury, burn the waste behind you
This land is the land of ours, this river runs red over it
We are not your allies, we can not defend
This is where they walked, this is where they swam
Take a picture here, take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone
Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone.

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, y'all.
Let me remember things I love
Stoppin' at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin' along the river road at night,
Barefoot girl dancin' in the moonlight.

I can hear the bullfrog callin' me, home.
Wonder if my rope's still hangin' to the tree.
Love to kick my feet 'way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back to mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.
Welllllll!

Up at Cody's camp I spent my days, Lord,
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers
Old Cody, Junior took me over,
Said, "You're gonna find the world is smould'rin'.
And if you get lost come on home to Green River."

Welllllll!
Come on home.

When I was a little girl
I had a rag doll
Only doll I've ever owned
Now I love you just the way I loved that
rag doll
But only now my love has grown

And it gets stronger, in every way
And it gets deeper, let me say
And it gets higher, day by day

And do I love you my oh my
Yeh river deep mountain high
If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

When you were a young boy
Did you have a puppy
That always followed you around
Well I'm gonna be as faithful as that puppy
No I'll never let you down

Cause it grows stronger, like a river flows
And it gets bigger baby, and heaven knows
And it gets sweeter baby, as it grows

And do I love you my oh my
Yeh river deep, mountain high
If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

I love you baby like a flower loves the
spring
And I love you baby just like Tina loves to
sing
And I love you baby like a school boy loves
his pet
And I love you baby, river deep mountain
high
Oh yeah you've gotta believe me
River Deep, Mountain High
Do I love you my oh my, oh baby
River deep, mountain high
If I lost you would I cry
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

64. "The River People" by the Walkabouts
Down here
everyone says that the River People don`t really belong here.
I know
what it`s like to be a stranger in a divided town beside a frontier.

People want your business and little more
I`ve watched shadows lengthen from a closed door.

Mountains wide,
nothing is clearer to the River People than what the others try and hide.
You spoke,
pushed your chair back at the meeting and I could tell that you were petrified.

You said the best people can suddenly oppose
The sight of good will and then it arose.
Two people, four people crossed the floor
I saw children run, I wept amidst the uproar

Around here
your stranded face before moonlight, the color of the sea.
You came
up to the house after swimming on sunset and the flattened sea.

The sky had opened, it had gone bust
You and I watched the River People swim before us
The sky had opened, it had gone bust
You and I watched the river people swim before us

You said the best people could suddenly oppose
The sight of good will and then it arose.
Two people, four people crossed the floor
I saw children run, I wept amidst the uproar

Down here . . .
You came . . .

67. I've Known Rivers
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 12:08 PM by MrScorpio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyeIXfswf2o

I've known rivers:
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I've seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I've known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

Written by Melanie Safka
1974

Some get put in prison
Others put themselves in one
Pittsburgh, you're the living proof

Some kill themselves living
Others get killed for trying, trying hard
They kill the ones who break the rule

Row me down, row me down
Monongahela River
Water down the city's gloom

Oh the lamplight is frozen
On windows and Sundays
So we never see the darkest room

But the heartfire is burning
And I keep praying one day
We will see the light of truth

Row me down, row me down
Monongahela River
Water down the city's gloom

Row your boat to the shore
Monongahela River
Isn't water anymore

Some get put in prison
Other put themselves in one
Pittsburgh, you're the living proof

76. James River Blues -- Old Crow Medicine Show

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-hmhF9cn_k

James River blues
I just heard the awful news
I could steer around the rocks
But they're bustin' down the docks

James River blues
That train came on through
And the work's gotten slow
Now wheres a boat man to go

I think I'll float on down
To Richmond town
They don't need us anymore
Haulin' freight from shore to shore
That big iron hauls much more
Than we ever could before

I've see good men going wrong
I've seen bad ones get it right
As that river rolls along
I'll be steppin' out tonight

On the cool flow
Floatin' down, down below
The bridge to the waters edge
From the ridge to the ledge
From the hills to the sea
I'll become a memory

James River blues
James River blues
James River blues

I recall a song, Churn Down Columbia, by Heather Alexander that was absolutely bewitching, but it's been years since I've heard it, and she hasn't posted the lyrics or a video yet. Poo.

77. Suzanne (Leonard Cohen)

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

"Cry Me A River"

Now you say you're lonely
You cry the long night through
Well, you can cry me a river
Cry me a river
I cried a river over you

Now you say you're sorry
For being so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river
Cry me a river
I cried a river over you

You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember, all that you said
You told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and

Now you say you love me
Well, just to prove that you do
Come on and cry me a river
Cry me a river
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
I cried a river...over you...

85. Bob Dylan - Watchin' the River Flow
What's the matter with me,
I don't have much to say,
Daylight sneakin' through the window
And I'm still in this all-night cafe.
Walkin' to and fro beneath the moon
Out to where the trucks are rollin' slow,
To sit down on this bank of sand
And watch the river flow.

Wish I was back in the city
Instead of this old bank of sand,
With the sun beating down over the chimney tops
And the one I love so close at hand.
If I had wings and I could fly,
I know where I would go.
But right now I'll just sit here so contentedly
And watch the river flow.

People disagreeing on all just about everything, yeah,
Makes you stop and all wonder why.
Why only yesterday I saw somebody on the street
Who just couldn't help but cry.
Oh, this ol' river keeps on rollin', though,
No matter what gets in the way and which way the wind does blow,
And as long as it does I'll just sit here
And watch the river flow.

People disagreeing everywhere you look,
Makes you wanna stop and read a book.
Why only yesterday I saw somebody on the street
That was really shook.
But this ol' river keeps on rollin', though,
No matter what gets in the way and which way the wind does blow,
And as long as it does I'll just sit here
And watch the river flow.

Watch the river flow,
Watchin' the river flow,
Watchin' the river flow,
But I'll sit down on this bank of sand
And watch the river flow.

88. Powderfinger by Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
With a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail
I think you'd better call John,
'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail
And it's less than a mile away
I hope they didn't come to stay
It's got numbers on the side and a gun
And it's makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains
Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou
So the Powers That Be left me here to do the thinkin'
And I just turned twenty-two
I was wonderin' what to do
And the closer they got,
The more those feelings grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin'
He told me, Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin'
But when the first shot hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye
Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder and the finger
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger
Think of me as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her.

91. let the river run--carly simon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv-0mmVnxPA

We're coming to the edge,
running on the water,
coming through the fog,
your sons and daughters.

Let the river run,
let all the dreamers
wake the nation.
Come, the New Jerusalem.

Silver cities rise,
the morning lights
the streets that meet them,
and sirens call them on
with a song.

It's asking for the taking.
Trembling, shaking.
Oh, my heart is aching.

We're coming to the edge,
running on the water,
coming through the fog,
your sons and daughters.

We the great and small
stand on a star
and blaze a trail of desire
through the dark'ning dawn.

It's asking for the taking.
Come run with me now,
the sky is the color of blue
you've never even seen
in the eyes of your lover.

Oh, my heart is aching.
We're coming to the edge,
running on the water,
coming through the fog,
your sons and daughters.

It's asking for the taking.
Trembling, shaking.
Oh, my heart is aching.
We're coming to the edge,
running on the water,
coming through the fog,
your sons and daughters.

Let the river run,
let all the dreamers
wake the nation.
Come, the New Jerusalem.

104. Dry River (James McMurtry - SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS)

Dry River

~Dave Alvin

I was born by a river
that was paved with cement
I was born by a river
that was paved with cement
Still I'd stand out in that river
and dream that I was soaking wet

(chorus)
Someday it's gonna rain
Someday it's gonna pour
Someday that old dry river
Won't be dry anymore

I played in the orange groves
'Til they bulldozed the trees
I played in the orange groves
'Til they bulldozed the trees
Still I'd stand out in those dead stumps
And smell the blossoms on the leaves

(chorus)
Some day it's gonna rain
Someday it's gonna pour
Someday those old dead trees
Won't be dead anymore

I fell in love with a woman
But she did not love me
I fell in love with a woman
But she did not love me
Now I'm as dry as that old river
And I'm as dead as those old trees
Someday it's gonna rain

(chorus)
Someday it's gonna pour
Someday this old heart of mine's
Gonna fall in love once more
Someday it's gonna rain

Someday it's gonna pour
Someday that old dry river
Won't be dry anymore
