Okay, who watched "Real Housewives of New York City" last night?
There's got to be someone. Please share my secret shame.

I managed to wean myself off the "Real Housewives" franchise a couple of months ago, but they've dragged me right back in. Kelly evidently had some type of psychotic episode on last night's show.

Sooooo, here's the question: If you were Bravo, would you have refused to run the episode, or would you have broken the fourth wall and demanded she get help? According to the information I just read, the others that were in the situation last night said the behavior continued for hours instead of the massively uncomfortable 20 minutes I viewed.

I guess this also answers the question about whether or not Bravo has any ethics whatsoever. Between the interception of the Salawis' limousine one block from the State dinner on Wednesday night and last night's broadcast, I'm guessing they won't stop till someone dies or is assaulted on camera.

IMHO, YMMV, what did you think?

1. Nutcase revealed! I almost posted in Cooking and Baking, however
because of the Chef vs Cook comments from the nutcase.

Overall, I found the whole thing very sad.

2. I didn't think they could top the "Naked Wasted" episode of RHOOC
They've done it. They managed to capture footage of a woman having a full-blown psychotic episode on a reality show.

I tweeted Andy Cohen about an hour ago and asked him how much he got for his soul.

3. But some things make more sense now...
I don't know how much to believe about this person, but she had been in the news for assaulting a boyfriend.

Now I can see it.

I also see this as the end of her Housewife career!

4. Oh, they love it when people bring the crazy
She'll be back. After all, nobody died or anything.

:sarcastic:

If I were her ex, though, I would have been on the phone with my attorney immediately and attempting to have the kids removed from her house.

That was just plain scary. Even worse, several of the other women present said that what ended up on the air was "tame".

I don't get it.

Danielle is the Jersey's version of Kelly on the NYC series. I watch the NJ series, also. I think Dina Manzo is awesome this season. The rest are just fighting amongst themselves.

15. I can't believe Danielle's ex lets those kids live with her, either
Where are these guys? Do they just not care about the kids at all?

Bravo has a definite talent for uncovering the least-functional people possible, don't they?

16. Kelly claims to have a diploma from Columbia
Bethenney has a new husband, a new baby, and is the only one to emerge from all these franchises with a brand.

She wins.

21. Have you noticed this?...
Nearly all of them have written a book or started a product line or created a YouTube hit since being on the show. Several of them have pushed their kids into modeling. (Various seasons.) And most of them have trimmed down and/or went for plastic surgery.

Poor Jo from the original series was just a little too late getting on the famewhore bandwagon.

I'm thinking Danielle will market a new line of lingerie, The Scorned Woman.

Tamara's son was arrested again. He'll probably get his own show for that!

25. She took classes from Columbia Extension
Lots of universities have these to increase revenue. They're essentially informal, no-credit classes. Anyone who can pay and shows up can attend.

She DID NOT graduate from (or even "attend") Columbia University, as she claims.

Though George W. did actually graduate from Yale and has a similar command of the English language.

My only redemption is in reading Richard Lawson's brilliant recaps of the show:

I'm addicted....totally and completely. I even do the New Jersey show but that's where I draw the limit. I'm from New Jersey and it's sort of like a trip home but with money.

I got the impression from the previews of next week that they are referring to Kelly's behavior as a "Breakdown" I would hope that she got some treatment which to me clearly seemed to be a break with reality. I was relieved that when the other women collectively realized that her behavior was the result of a medical issue of some sort (either mental or drug induced) they backed off and diffused the situation. I'm saddened that her kids will see this some day.

I'm sort of of two minds about these shows. If you sign up and sell yourself to a franchise like this then be aware of what you are getting into. On the other hand when someone clearly has an episode like this you would hope the network wouldn't exploit their employees like that... But this is America and the bottom line we've come to expect and tolerate is that if it's good for business it's a good thing.

Jill's coming back into the picture next week so this train wreck is going off the rails....Talk about insane.....

17. I think it's comical
they insisted on putting huge disclaimers all over the RHOOC episodes with teenage daughters of one of the featured "housewives" drinking, but there were no disclaimers at all on Thursday night's program.

I wondered to myself if Sarah Jessica Parker watched the episode before Thursday night's "Watch What Happens", and what she thought about it. Bravo's offerings used to be fun and interesting; they're now a better-produced version of "The Jerry Springer Show". The money isn't good enough to subject yourself and your family to this kind of humiliation.

Andy Cohen claimed over Twitter there was a physical altercation during the filming of the RHOOC reunion show, and then quickly backed off it when questioned about it later.

9. I admit my secret shame.....
Hopefully, they got Kelly some help--that looked like a full-blown manic episode, brought on by some serious ingestion of toxic substances....

Wow. I can't wait to see the 'lost' footage of that.

I admit it, I'd watch it.

12. If it makes for a good story, Bravo doesn't care.
My secret addition is Real Housewives of Orange County, and this past year Bravo chronicled underage drinking, even to the point of rolling cameras while one kid left a party drunk and got behind the wheel. Nothing was done, to my knowledge. I wonder what the liability would have been if something had happened. At the end of the episodes where the kids got shit-faced they ran a disclaimer saying that they did not "condone" the behavior. No, but they sure as hell don't mind exploiting it for profit.

18. The husband of one of the NJ "housewives"
got a DUI after being out for the evening with a party including Tamra of RHOOC.

It's a matter of time before there's an accident, and Bravo is sued out of business by the victims.

IMHO.

Edited on Sat May-22-10 09:10 AM by carlyhippy
I didn't care about the Atlanta series and not real fond of the OC series. I dont know what the witch hunt on Jill is about, she seems to be about the most normal one, I like the new addition, Sonya.

Kelly has always seemed like she has some problems.

20. Loved it! Kelly is a stone cold psycho
She's had a history of weird stuff - public fights with boyfriends - stuff like that. I think she was arrested at some point during the "off season".

I've not been a fan of the NYC wives, can't stand the Atlanta wives, think the Jersey wives are a soprano rip-off, but I love the OC wives and have been sucked into NYC and Jersey.

It's definitely my "guilty pleasure" tv watching.

22. I used to like the NYC wives the best...
they seemed more "real" than the OC ladies.

But they may have been asked to beef up the drama or something because they are off the hook now!

The Atlanta wives were a complete insult to Atlanta. Wannabes with no class.

24. I watch RHONY and RHONJ
and, occasionally, the Atlanta one.

It's been clear from the start that, semi-scripting, reality show, bad editing factors aside, Kelly is delusional, has a poor grasp of both irony and English idiom, and cannot get along with other women.

This episode was further proof that television is completely amoral. Editing aside, she was obviously having some kind of psychotic break on national television.

It seemed she was either suffering from some sort of severe personality disorder (schizophrenia, bi-polar, borderline personality disorder?) and/or was abusing drugs (probably meth - which, indeed, smells like cat pee, as Sonja noticed when in Kelly's room on the yacht; coke; or perhaps even a prescription drug like oxycontin).

However, I did feel a considerable amount of schadenfreude, and the episode was, rightly or wrongly, one of the most entertaining ever - even more entertaining that the "prostitution whore" table flipping in New Jersey, and less contrived.

Confession: I love Bethenny Frankel.

26. I didn't know that about the cat pee smell...
That kind of boat hardly strikes me as being capable of having a cat pee smell. So the drug thing makes sense.

She does seem to be ON something. She'll get that sing-song voice and start talking about rainbows and sunshine...
