What's your favorite "big city"?
.
American or otherwise.
.
I think I like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. equally because of
all the cultural and historical things to do there (most of it FREE
in D.C.).
.
It WAS nice to have Chinese food for lunch in NYC's Little China and
walk across the street and have cannoli for dessert in Little Italy.
.
Yours?
.

.

3. Mexico City where I grew up
Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 08:23 AM by lunatica
It's a wonderful mixture of the Pre-Colonial, Colonial and Post Colonial cultures

La Catedral built by the conquering Spanish invaders on top of the destroyed Aztec City of Tenochtitlan. It's in the Zocalo, the heart of the city. The dancers in the foreground are native descendants of the Aztecs.

41. Here's why:
apart from the cultural melange;
apart from the stunning architecture;
apart from the ready-to-work persona of the town...

the food. Chicago is an amazing place to eat. You can eat somewhere different for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and not have to repeat a single place for over three years. We have Mexican food, Indian food, Italian food, Polish food, and I know where there's an Ethiopian place. If you're hungry, come to Chicago. We'll feed ya.

8. Toss up between NYC and Kyoto. I love 'em both.
NYC holds the edge in that I speak the same language so get around more easily and I know it like the back of my hand, having lived there for eons. But Kyoto has the advantage of Japanese food everywhere, and beautiful temples and gentle people and gorgeous scenery and beautiful things.

They're both awesome.

If I ever become rich, I'll have homes in both places. And probably Paris, too, because come on - if you're gonna have multiple homes, it's fucking dumb not to have one in Paris. Or if not Paris, somewhere on the French coast, or a nice Chateau out in the country...

19. hey, what did you end up doing/seeing (as in the tourist stuff)?
Or did you post something I missed?

There is some cool stuff in and around the Phx metro area but the whole county is too full of developers and pukes. Get down to Tucson for better social-political vibes. (not that there aren't developers and pukes there too, but there is a little more balance, plus it's closer to Mexico)

21. I went driving around the Scottsdale-Phoenix area
Up North and East past Fountain Hills into Tonto National Forest (hate that name) and then down south and west of Phoenix to South Mountain Park. Yeah, I didn't post any pictures- I was pretty beat when I got back, but I did get a nice taste of the desert. South Mountain Park in particular was incredible. Not far from Phoenix but definitely seemed remote!

63. I just like the movement and energy ... and the beautiful
subway system. We have friends who live there so it was not really intimidating even from the first visit. It reminded me of NYC in a way - just busy, loud, with lots going on.

St. Petersburg is beautiful and quiet; I think I'd rather live there than Moscow, but Moscow just has this *zing* to it.

How about you? What do you like about it? :hi:

75. What??? You people never heard "All roads Lead to Rome"???
A morning latte in an outdoor cafe, a crisp glass of Pinot Grigio at lunch, beautiful men and women on their Piaggio scooters, and art everywhere you look. It's dirty, it's noisy, crowded with pushy people--and there are street market's with the freshest, tastiest fruit and veg you've ever experienced.

I love everything about Italy, but Rome just resonates for me.

As for London, I lived there for 5 years, and I'm over the expense and the weather. When I lived there in the 70s, it was majorly cheap, Thatcher's reign of terror drove prices thru the roof!! But it was always soggy and freezing in the winter, getting dark at 4pm. Don't get me wrong, I still love it, but the Mediterranean just captured my heart. If money were no object, I would live on the coast in Latina and be on that train to Roma Termini at least 4 times a week.
