why is football a religion in the south?
American football was actually invented in the northeastern states and was popular in places like Cambridge or New Haven. Football was considered a high class sport in the southern states and wasn't popular. Now in the northeastern states, football isn't that big of a deal, when in the southern states its practically a religion. What changed?

the thing abt the south is there are lots of really smart people with NOTHING to do w. their minds

football is actually a complex game yet it's one you can talk abt w/. "the boys" -- what is there to say about putting a ball thru a hoop or in a hole except "OMGAWD THAT BLACK GUY SLEPT WITH A LOTTA WOMEN!!!!" football just has more ways to win and plot out a win than that

there's a feeling w. baseball that there was too much cheating and too much "buying" of games/titles by rich interests -- the game is all about money and not abt the game -- maybe unfair but that's the image

8. The first answer is that we all grew up playing it....
Of course that may be the symptom and not the disease.

I grew up in a town of 1,500 people. Our school drew from the whole parish. Friday night football was an event. Practically everyone in the parish was there. We were State Champs my freshman year (I won't even say how many years ago b/c it is so long). If I go home, people want to talk to me about the championship game.

I think it is a "religion" b/c it is one of the only things that gives meaning to an otherwise difficult life in the rural parts of many states.

Are you sure? Because I live in Texas, and I know the answer to this!!!

It's because many Southern men (not all, so don't flame me, but "many") Southern men so wish that they had the guts themselves to get out there on that gridiron and kick some butt. And, of course, most do not have the guts, so they do the next best thing and that is to live vicariously through those that do actually play the game.

That is why the phrases "WE won" or "WE lost" are acceptable phrases in the football dictionary. But "WE" were not out there playing.

I make no comment about the women who follow the game.
