And yes, this resulted in a four or five question back-and-forth about this amazingly agonizing decision he which this man had to make.

Personally, I would have told him to leave it at his desk. That way he doesn't have to carry it around all the time.
On the other hand, 2% of mouses left at an office desk end up on the black market within four years of being purchased, so maybe packing it up each night isn't a bad idea.
Tough call.
