41. I was *almost* born in Tacoma

My dad was in the Navy, and he was assigned there for 6 months while his gunboat was getting its finishing touches done in time for its commissioning (which was my due date).

The Navy misled my dad into thinking there was no housing available for him, his pregnant wife, and pre-school age daughter. So when the time came, he got an approved leave, and flew back home to CA just in time for my birth.

I was exactly 2 weeks early, so he made it back to Tacoma in plenty of time for the commissioning ceremony. The ship was then assigned to its home port in CA, and within a few more months he was bound for Vietnam.

152. The hospital is actually in Portsmouth, not Norfolk.

I was the night nursing supervisor there from '75-'78, in the main hospital.

The maternity ward was in the old hospital, which is an historical site. The basement was a dungeon which housed prisoners during the Civil War, and the only light in the OR was provided by a large glass dome which let sunlight in. If they had to do surgery at night, it was by candlelight or oil lamp. It's a really neat building, lots of history.

I forgot to mention there was a tunnel that went out into the river so that ships could unload supplies there. The entire place is supposedly haunted by Civil War soldiers who died there.
