A riddle for the ages
I just have to ask why

Why did god make an ape that can cry?
an animal that feels love and yet knows it will die?

Was it a joke made at our expense
that we briefly exist in this present tense?

Thrust here wet and wailing at the instant of birth
only moments later, returned to the Earth?

Seeking in others our rest and our home
but, finding ourselves in the end alone?

Some opaque plan, or was it in jest?
Why aren't we on the Earth like the rest

happy to swing from tree to tree
blissfully unburdened by the futures we see?

If you ever see HIM, for me ask him why
