1. I adore Jean Stapleton.
She was the absolute heart of "All in the Family." Her brilliance made Edith the perfect foil to Archie and gave the whole series a warmth that made all the new and scary controversy more digestible to a nation.

Edith would have been such an easy character to play badly. Imagine any other actress doing it, and the possible pitfalls. She struck just the right notes.

She brought a heart to that series that it desperately needed, as clearly evidenced by what happened to it after she was gone.

Not to mention all her other brilliant work...but she will always be Edith to me.

Happy birthday, Ms. Stapleton!

2. Yes. The early AiTF episodes it's amazing to watch stage actors do it right. nt

4. True, without Jean, AITF would not have worked...he would have
just been a heartless bigot...you needed her grounding.

Trying to figure out what she's up to these days...apparently simply "retired."

5. Jean was in a commercial about ending the slaughter of harp seals
Then they showed footage of the seals being clubbed. I was warped for life. It took me years to get over it.
