James Cameron tells autograph seeker "I don't owe you a fucking signature"

James Cameron in Major A-Hole Dispute

Posted Dec 24th 2009 12:35PM by TMZ Staff

James Cameron -- the guy who directed "Avatar" -- directed a few choice words at an autograph seeking fan last night -- calling the guy a "f**king a**hole" during an argument over a signature.

It all went down at LAX -- when James walked past a man holding an "Avatar" poster, and refused to sign. The man went back to Cameron and asked again to which James replied, "I don't owe you a f**king signature ... just get out of my f**king personal space."

That's when the fan lost it and replied, "I'm an asshole because I ask someone I admire for their autograph that makes me an a**hole? I make $15-an-hour at work to go see your film and I'm an a**hole?"

Ultimately, James calmly walked away from the situation while the fan continued to yell at him.

1. I accidentally caught that on TMZ a half hour ago.
Cameron definitely came across as a jackass.

2. What sort of adult asks for an autograph?
I don't get it.

OK. That's a lie. I'd ask Mario Andretti--at the track--or Joe Satriani--to sign my guitar (the model of patience, brings his own sharpie!)

Never James Cameron.

3. Bullshit. Cameron is on his own time; he shouldn't be bothered.
The autograph hound asks once, Cameron says no - that should be the end of it. Instead, the guy pursues him & whines to him about it.

If the guy was considerate & a real fan, that's one thing. But most often, the people asking for signatures are looking to make a buck.

18. Its too bad about autographs today
I collected them and I even have some rare ones, Like Angelina Jolie .. who hardly signs anymore. I hate that people get them to sell them on Ebay. It makes the rest of us real fans look lame, and makes it all the more harder for someone to get an autograph which as a fan, we can really appreciate.

Not only that but now there are bogus autographs, sold as the real thing. You can hardly find any sports memorabilia item that may or may not be real.

I only collect autographs from my favorite Japanese artists. They are harder to get, since most of them are in Japan. When the artists come here, I don't mind asking for them. I wish I could have gotten BoA Kwon, when I saw her in concert but Utada Hikaru is coming to town, so maybe I can snag hers. I love autograph collecting! But, now its much harder when people like the one in the OP are so rude.

4. I don't think that anyone should be asking anyone for their signature.
A director, filmmaker, anyone has the right to be left alone. Back off, don't start leaning on the guy for something.
Show a little dignity, don't glom onto the guy because he is a director. This is his claim to fame, he went to see a film? Big deal, only how many millions do that every day?

5. Cameron is an Arrogant Bastard.
I worked on Cameron's Titanic Movie in Nova Scotia and I have witnessed firsthand just how he treats people around him. I watched him scream and curse at Gloria Frances Stewart ,87 years old at the time, (the old lady who played rose) for walking too fast barefoot across the cold steel stern of the Russian scientific research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. In that scene she walks barefoot to the stern of the boat and drops the blue diamond into the Atlantic.
He's a real arrogant bastard who needs to be knocked down few notches, it’s as simple as that.

6. I wonder how often James Cameron has made demands
on some regular working person while braying "Don't you know who I am?"

9. He said no
He probably didn't have the time to do a signature at the time. I knew of other celebs who were very generous with charities and gave their time up for those but HATED to give autographs.

Which is why I do not like asking celebs whenever I see them for their autographs... often times they like a wee bit of chat!

10. I don't get it
This guy demanding the autograph won't shut up even going so far as to videotape the 'incident' and Cameron's the asshole?

14. He videotapes it, thinking: "If I get the signature I can sell the poster for
$200 on e-bay. If I don't get it and Cameron is a jerk, I can yell at him and try to goad him further, then I can sell the video to TMZ and make $5000!"

11. He seems like a real ass. It seems I remember hearing
before about what an ass he is. I am sure celebs have it rough when it comes to the public, and I have no idea what that must be like, just like I have no idea what it must be like to make mega millions off of the fans that go see my movies.

13. That moron wasn't a "fan." He's an e-bay celebrity memorabilia profiteer
He wanted something for nothing. He wanted Cameron's scribble, so he could sell the $2 poster for $200 to some scmhuck on an auction site. He can bitch all he wants about Cameron having the big bucks and ignoring the working stiffs, but Cameron actually invested time and effort into creating something that millions of people want to see. This autograph pimp doesn't produce anything. He badgers celebrities into writing their name, and he sells it for an outrageous profit.

16. Oh, sure, I'm not denying that. He probably is a major turd.
But even turds have the right to refuse giving an autograph to another turd.

like i just did.

19. Cameron might be an asshole, but he wasn't in this situation. Autograph seeker was.
There should be a new law in America that, after one has said "no" to a stranger, any further harassment gives the harrassee one legally free punch to the face.

Whether it be autograph seeker, construction worker catcalling a woman on the sidewalk, or salesperson in a store.

of just such a reaction.
