Fellow DU airplane nuts, a question:
Why is it that people who post clips featuring airplanes on youtube are compelled to add music tracks to the videos?

To me, the sound of the airplane would be music enough.

3. well maybe i'm the wrong kind of airplane nut
but i do not find the "music" of an airplane to be at all pleasant, not when i was living by an airport and not now that i'm flying close to 75,000 miles a yr

i don't make clips myself but most of the ones i've viewed, i thought the music was an improvement, it captures the mood of what the person was thinking/feeling much better than the roar of the jets, one gets tired of all that white noise rumbling in one's bones

5. Nothing quite like the sound of a P-51 Mustang.
I've heard a few of them in my life and the sound is beautiful.

7. I recognized the sound of a DC-3 over Toronto before I even saw it. And ...
being up close to a B-17 when it landed at Norfolk's airport was awesome as it taxied right up to us!

8. put an F-14 up against the blast fence
and go to full thrust........

No sound-track needed...and I hear ya man.

Luckily I'm in the industry and can hear it anytime I want to...

9. Back in the early 50s...
we lived in an apartment on Lackland AFB. Directly under the flightpath for Kelly Field to the south of us. Can still remember everything in the apt. rattling every time a B-36 or the XC99 came in to land...the sound of those engines was amazing.

19. I've experienced this firsthand on the flight deck of the USS Lincoln.
There is nothing like it. I still can't believe they cut up all those Tomcats.

11. would it be mean then for me to say i hope you live in a neighborhood where you can enjoy it freq?
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 09:00 PM by pitohui
the sound of airplanes is noise pollution proven to shorten people's lives, because of the affects of the constant drone of noise on their hearing, which apparently somehow impacts their sleep and their chances of developing heart disease/diabetes, that's why poor people (i used to be one of them) are the ones living in neighborhoods by the airport

look, i fly, i fly A LOT, but to pretend that the sound of airplanes is anything other than noise pollution is a bit much for me to swallow

if the sound of airplanes was so great, i'm waiting for all the macmansions to be built near the airport and all the section 8 housing to be relocated to a nice all-too-quiet spot by the lake...

i'm not yelling at you, but i get tired of the well-to-do putting out a nice buffet of shit and calling it a sandwich

there is nothing pleasant about airplane noise, and it can really wear on you, hour after hour, when you're flying, and god help you if you're NOT flying but just misfortunate enough to have to live around the airport...then you get all the "benefits" of the shitty noise and none of the pleasures of travel

12. Actually, I live on approximately 3-mile final for MSP runway 12L.
Airplanes fly over my house all day, every day, at low altitude, gear down. And no, airplane noise truly doesn't bother me. I can see how it would bother many people, but I'm used to it. I'm an airline employee, so maybe my perspective is a little different.

Awesome. Next time I'll wave! (my doc is having a conference on my type of disease at Rochester next spring. Seriously considering going. I will let you know) :hi:

13. Well, we'll have to disagree. I used to fly a lot as well, and every time I could,
I'd hang out at the airport to watch and listen to the airplanes. Of course, that was back when airports had observation decks.

14. I like the sound of non-jet engines.
Especially when the engine is about 4 feet in front of me at 10,000ft.

Woo-Hoo :bounce:

15. there is no music sweeter than a strong running internal combustion engine.
i'm a car guy, and don't know squat about planes, but my shop is a hangar at a small airport, i don't know how many times i've jumped out from under a car and out the door to see what vintage warbird is rattling the walls.

16. To be overwhelmed by the engine music attend an Oshkosh AirVenture
I haven't been for a few years; but, this year there were 2600 show planes and 10,000 attendees landing their planes at Oshkosh and a few nearby airports. It is airplane madness, heaven for an airplane lover. Since it is put on by the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) many, if not most, of the aircraft are homebuilt.

My avatar is not me but a photo of a plane built using the same plans.
