Sorry, but it has to be said.

1. I use Internet Explorer 7 because I have no need to change
Does that mean that Bill Gates is going to turn me into a freeper when IE 9 comes out?

2. Nup. It means Microsoft ( and others) will have enough hacked info
to try and blackmail you into Freeperdom before IE 9's release.

and I'd like to talk to you about a site you visited on August 4th, Mr Anderson

3. IE is and always has been a worthless piece of shit, except for malicious hackers.
It is only worthwhile to malicious hackers because it is so full of security holes.

As for people using it voluntarily, do you regularly poke yourself in the eye with a sharp object as well? Why would you use something slower than a January dog turd in Maine and that has a welcome mat out for malware?

5. IE6 especially
Edited on Sat Dec-12-09 10:41 AM by alcibiades_mystery
People who continue to use IE6 are literally ruining the potential for good internet experiences and adding unnecessary work for those trying to create strong interfaces. I know, I know. The "user" is always right. But in the case of IE6, we can at least say that the "user" is a lazy and inconsiderate fuck. Even if they don't go with Firefox or Opera or something like that, IE is up to EIGHT already. Fucking update, fer chrissake.

:-)

6. I developed a website for a major client who clung to IE6
DHTML drop-down menus, based on the "Son of Suckerfish" model.

Looked great, worked great, a success.

Then the client said "My brother told me the site isn't working."

Because the brother uses IE6.

So it took another week of IE6 hacks to get it to work...finally...because these hacks are not "universal," they are all trial-and-error on a situation by situation basis. You go from one hack to the next until you land on the one that works.

THANKS, Microsoft!

:grr:

The time spent on fixing stupid and idiosyncratic IE6 problems is unbelievable.

Hence the "by choice" qualifier.

10. This is true
IT people should be on that, though it would certainly cost some money for a general browser upgrade, which in many cases is not even needed.

17. Yep and in this tight market redoing custom apps for IE8 is not
in the budget. All that custom IE6 stuff will take an long time to go away.

13. I was using IE6 until about 6 months ago.
I just didn't even realize there were browser updates. I only use the computer to shop with really and to visit D.U. and stuff like that - I'm just not pc savvy nor do I really care to be, "as long as the pc works I'm good" is what I thought - I just didn't even KNOW it could be better!

It wasn't until there was a major update(windows?) and I checked other stuff out that I realized not only was I not using IE 8 but not even 7!

But even then I was reluctant to update; like I said I am NOT pc savvy, I HATE changing stuff for fear I'll break it. But I did it and much to my surprise all was well!

I was amazed how incredibly fast and so much more user friendly firefox is! Love. it.

14. Yes, I was being too much of a dick
(not unusual for me). Dealing with IE6 issues is so frustrating and such a timesink that it's easy to fall into dickish behavior towards many non computer savvy people who continue to use it. It's wrong. There is something to the saying that the user is always right. But it IS frustrating when you're trying to code and test.

15. nah, you're fine.
I mean, now that I am updated/ using firefox? I get it! IE6 was bad! I used to crash all the time and pages were slow to open and I got all these error stops etc. - I just thought that was normal, lol.

I'm a pretty quick study though. Once I realized how out of date evrything was I knew I had to do it and did.

But I bet there are a LOT of people out there using IE6 that just don't even realize how bad it is.

21. Just switched to Chrome...
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 12:12 AM by BolivarianHero
3.6 beta refused to play nice with my university's WebCT site, so rather than downgrading, I just tried Chrome 4...I find it faster and more stable than either FireFox or IEek, and it should catch up in features now that it's become extensible.

I may look into Chromium or some other open-source Chrome variant, but I don't know if it would be worth the effort.

23. I couldn't care less...
If I want Linux, I'll install Ubuntu. :P

People complaining about Google being a monopoly are morons; Google doesn't generally compete in fields where vendor lock-in is an issue (technically, it's an issue with Chrome, but the browser respects web standards so it's immaterial unless they change their philosophy dramatically) and their having 90% of the search engine market share doesn't stop me from using another search engine. Conversely, Microsoft has deliberately designed Internet Explorer to stifle competitors and web designers through poor standards implementation so that they can maintain an advantage without needing to create the superior product and uses proprietary formats for just about everything. Their commanding share of the OS market share makes it necessary for most commercial software firms to design applications for Windows first.

25. I know my opinion borders on brand idealism...
But I don't think I'm as offensive as blind Apple fanboys who like things better simply because it has an Apple logo on it (though there is much to be said for IPods and Safari)...I was reading an article comparing web browsers in Wikipedia, and apparently Mosaic, a browser that predates Netscape Navigator 1.0 (the oldest web browser I remember using by name is 3.0, but I must have used NN 2.0), had better support for image formats (both open and proprietary) than Internet Explorer 8 does.
