Oh God I just watched my cat bring in a lizard and killed it in front of me.
I know people will say, "That's what they do" but it still bothers me. I tried to get him to take it back outside by screaming but it didn't work.

So I just picked up a newly dead lizard with a paper towel and put it outside in the garden.

Good friggin morning

 :banghead:

34. I am assuming that by "saving" what was actually meant was
"saving" from continuing to breathe air as a feral, invasive species.

38. Hey Prince Harry has bee labeled a feral cat because he was living
out in the neighborhood. I was driving one night and this cat was laying in the road so I put the high beams on and pulled up a little and he didn't move.

So I got out of the car and he ran right up to me. Right up to me! It was like he was looking for someone to save him. I have found out since that there is a feral cat population in that area and have given 2 families the information about catch and release and the free spay/neuter program.

Prince Harry was just neutered. I think that has a bit to do with whether they are going to be real hunters, (as opposed to little lizards in the lanai) or not. He has a lot less testosterone in him now.

And they clipped his ear because he is/was ferrel in case I wanted to let him back out.

But this cat wouldn't stay away if I paid him. He is the most loving cat I have ever met. I can't keep him inside for a number of reasons but I can tell you that between me and a few of my neighbors we have captured several feral cats and they have been taken by animal control.

I know about the bird/cat problem and if I see him hunting or trying to hunt birds I will do something about it, (I already gave up a cat because he was such a bird hunter)

4. We had a bird in the wood stove over the summer
I opened the door, the bird flapped around the living room for a bit, crashed into a few walls, then tried to fly out the front door when suddenly the cat leapt off the back of the couch and nailed the bastard in mid-air. He (the cat) paraded his prize around the yard for a while.

8. If its any consolation, the lizard probably didn't feel much pain
Edited on Tue Nov-24-09 04:23 PM by Taverner
Most cats like to snap fast things necks, so they don't lose it. A mouse they might keep alive for a day, with the arms and legs chewed off. But a quick animal like a lizard, they dispatch quickly.

ON EDIT: Did I mention my Cat in Thailand used to do that? Catch mice and chew their legs off, leaving them alive to suffer for hours.

fortunately there are laws against that as there are about domestic animals loose in the wild in most places.

11. I've always had cats. I remember some doozies.
Like when my favorite cat ever, a mellow tabby male (who's thirteen and only now starting to slow down a bit), came in from the back door one summer morning, just before I left for work, with an almost-dead baby bird in his mouth. He then proceeded to "finish the job", to protests from the poor little thing. I almost vomited and couldn't bring myself to go near it. He must have taken care of it while I was at work, 'cause it was totally gone when I returned that afternoon. The look on his face was what was so disturbing. That sweet, affectionate, mellow, loving cat had the look of a vicious lion stalking and eating prey.

Another time a neighbor's cat came running past with a live baby rabbit in its mouth, screeching, with the mother rabbit not far behind, screaming. THAT was really hard to take, even though I knew the cat was just being a cat.

Then there were the cats who'd leave little "presents" for us, like dead mice.

Well, the one wilder kitty, when she does it, I put her inside for a couple of hours and then I go and take the live critter way out in he woods and release it, guess what? Half the time she finds it again and then I find the carcass in the yard.

15. I posted about this some months ago
When my "child" Oliver (he's about 6) got through a small opening under the a/c and pulled in a bird. I was only half awake at that moment, so it was something I didn't have forewarning of.

He got the bird (somehow) to the bathroom, and when I got there (I woke up pretty fast!), Oliver and the bird were in the tub, the bird looking paralysed, and Oliver not sure what to do!

I grabbed the bird, and found he was still quite alive, and he jumped out of my hands down behind the toilet. I scooted Oliver out of the bathroom, closing the door. A short while later, I checked behind the toilet thinking I was going to have to pull a dead bird out, but the bird was very much alive! So I opened the window and got him to fly out.

The thing is, how did Oliver get the bird into the bathroon still alive and kicking? It was nice of Oliver to get that part of it right, and I did close up the opening under the a/c so I don't have to go throught that again!

Edited on Thu Nov-26-09 01:14 AM by Maraya1969
Yes that is his name, would bring into the house. And some I would take to the wildlife rehabilitation place if they seemed injured. Once I woke up with a black bird flying around my bedroom. I have a couple pictures of it on a disk...........really.

EDIT: To add that this is the cat that I had to give up because he was killing too many birds. I gave him to the humane association with the note that he had to go to a family where he was to be kept indoors.

17. I don't have a cat but there are a few ferel ones in the neighborhood.
We also have a hearty wild life population for a town setting. (most towns around here do) I feed the squirrels that live next to me and it has been my non-pleasure to have two of my squirrels killed by the cats, one of which I witnessed. I will not repeat the names I called the cat.

It is not that I dislike cats, but during my years of illness these squirrels have served as entertainment/comfort many a day. They have become my wild pets although they would never let me get close to them. I'm the walker of two rather large dogs so there is no chance of any other animal getting close to me. ;)

As offputting as it is, it's a grave insult to the cat to dispose of the remnants in front of said cat. They think it's the ultimate blow-off.

32. Here's a happy cat and bird story
To brighten your day.
We adopted an outdoor cat from people who weren't taking care of her, she had already had two litters before we adopted her. One day, I went outside to the garage and she was meowing and walking back and forth while looking at me. I figured she wanted me to follow her. She led me to a baby bird which had fallen out of the tree. We couldn't see the nest, so we took the baby bird to a bird rescuer and she/he was later released.
yay! birds and cats happily living together. :loveya:

37. Your cat didn't kill the lizard in your presence because "that's what they do"
Edited on Wed Nov-25-09 10:18 PM by rocktivity
Your cat killed the lizard in your presence because that's his idea of returning the affection and attention you've given him. It's his way of saying, "To reward your love, I'm going to earn my keep by ensuring that no vermin/lizard/bird gets even the CHANCE of having the run of your house!" And what thanks does he get? You scream. Irony of ironies...

44. This was my vet's take on our cats bringing in live things to kill
Deep inside your cat's DNA is the need to teach the young to kill so the youngsters can learn to survive on their own in the wild. She is simply passing this on to you because she hasn't witnessed you kill to eat and she wants you to learn by her example. We have two abandoned feral cats who have desperately tried to teach us this. It's to the point where they both think we are idiots, but they keep trying.
