1. I was listening to the Dream Theater covers disc earlier.
Petrucci absolutely SHREDS on Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You".

2. I have the D.T. Iron Maiden & Metallica discs...

...both got higher marks on Amazon than the other two in the series, their covers of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" and Deep Purple's "Made In Japan."

Also, in the realm of "G3" collaborators (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and a third guitarist), I'd have to say Petrucci's the obvious winner. I never understood why they picked Eric Johnson the first time out...unless they wanted a third guy with a completely different style...and on the second one, Yngwie Malmsteen just sounded like the Lone Shredder.

But Petrucci? This CD just BURNS, from front to back, and it's a performance of equal thirds. Nobody blows anybody off the stage...they're all "on," and they just seamlessly hand off the spotlight to each other.

I'm gonna assume you already own that one, and if you don't...own it. Soon.

3. I have to wonder why Joe picked Yngwie
Since I cannot stand the guy. :-)

It's an interesting mix of players Satriani invites to play. (Beck, Clapton, etc. never say yes)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G3_(tour)

among the fun facts:

John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Eric Johnson and Robert Fripp are the only guitarists (excluding Joe Satriani and Steve Vai) who have played on the G3 tour more than one time

That's right, Robert Fripp.

And Petrucci's toured more than Vai.

But anyway, here's an under-viewed impromptu G3 Jam that took place last year with Satch, Petrucci, and Leslie West (Mountain opened for Satch)playing "Goin' Down" Those guys must have played it a thousand times, but they're still having fun.

4. Fripp?
That's a surprise...never knew that.

Gilbert makes sense...although I always thought of Mr. Big as Van Halen with training wheels...and when you think about it, Mr. Big was not radically different from Extreme, and Eddie picked Cherrone for the ill-fated III album...you never know what motivates these guys.

5. I own all the DT covers discs.
The Dark Side Of The Moon one was pretty impressive - I'd even say underrated. The new one is a bunch of random covers (and I do mean random) - it's pretty hit or miss.
