3. I live in a small town.
The lady @ the post office is a local animal rescuer that I know pretty well. She told me Monday that there was someone at the local Safeway giving away Aus Shep / Blue Heeler puppies over the weekend. She then told me that she wished she'd taken them all when she saw them as she later found out that the woman giving them away took the unclaimed puppies a few miles away and dumped them - one of which was hit by a car and killed. Another woman managed to catch the remaining pup before it was hurt as well.

I figure the pups were probably about 6-8 weeks old. It both infuriates me and causes me great anguish to think about the fear and confusion these animals were put through because their human was so irresponsible. And one puppy's suffering and loss of life. It absolutely sickens me.

Oddly enough, my dog came from a similar situation. Someone in front of a Target with a box crammed w/ puppies. They were going to dump the box and leave so a woman picked them all up and ended up giving 6 away to Target employees. 4 others made it back to my town and ended up with me and my co-workers. I'm so thankful to have him and he is AWESOME - but I'd sure like to kick the asses of the people that were irresponsible enough, number one, to have unwanted puppies in the first place, and then were so willing to throw them out like trash.

5. Oh, those poor puppies...
...glad your's had a happy ending. I've yet to see people with boxes of puppies to give away, although I know that happens. I often see kittens in front of supermarkets...I'm tempted to tell them I'll take them and the mom and get the mom fixed...

6. I have some weird sort of need to stare into the face of things others go out of their way to avoid.
I don't know how to explain it. It's almost like an honor thing with me on some level. Facing it (whether it be animal abuse, casualties of war, or whatever) means I see and empathize (and recognize) the suffering, no matter how personally painful I may find it to be. For me, not wanting to SEE is not wanting to think about it. Not wanting to think about it is dismissive of their torment, and a dishonor to those suffering.

8. I like that.
You are absolutely right about it being a dishonor to those suffering. I wish I could handle it as well as you.

4. I can't get those images out of my mind if I see it.
I've been better lately about not watching it.

The people who have the stomach to do that work are absolute heroes to me.

7. Not just the stomach to do it...
But the restraint not to tear some people 800 bloody new assholes.

It's why I don't think I could work in a veterinary office, in any capacity.
