I am finally going to learn how to drive!
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 08:22 AM by Sannum
I live in a major city, so there was never any need. However, I do want to escape sometime within the next few years - my goal is to be a licensed driver before the end of the year! I found a driving school that gives private classes to adults who are anxious about driving - wish me luck!!

4. I'm a phobic non-driver too and I've always wondered
why people don't blink an eye at phobic non-fliers but look at those who don't drive as if we have three heads. "What? You don't drive?? Did you ever drive? WOW!! What's wrong with you??"

5. Ayuh. I know just what you mean. And then there's the guilt of putting family and friends out by
asking for rides. :(

8. Yes, the guilt is huge and thank heavens for friends and family.
I make sure I only need to go to the grocery store once every two weeks or so and to tag along when someone else has errands. Doctor appointments and lab work, etc. can't be incorporated into others' schedules though. I'm so glad I'm relatively healthy. Anyway, kudos to the OP.

12. so true.
I don't mind flying - I have a driving-phobia because I am a true control freak. I can't control what other drivers do around me. I am working on my trust issues and this is a huge part of it.

In 3 months, I hope to have my license and the worst problem will be finding parking where I live! I want to buy a clunker first, then eventually as I get more courage (and move to a building with a parking garage)I will spring for something nicer.

6. Here's the advice my Dad gave me when I was a nervous beginner...
Look, you've got THREE things to worry about:

The brake;

The gas;

and the steering wheel.

Everything else is not under your control.

My biggest fear was being side-swiped by
drivers next to me. Guess what...there's
NOTHING you can do about that, so you have
to assume they will stay in their own lane!

Good Luck! I know you will do well.

9. That's some of the best advice I've seen
I tried to teach my son to drive, but finally gave up and sent him to a driving school.

I think my daughter will do better because she actually listens and follows instructions well. I let her fly my plane in the air and taxi it on the ground and she does quite well with that.

14. I was born with the gift of being able to drive off the bat
I got my permit at 15-years-old and 6 months. My Mother taught me how to drive way before driver's ed. I only took driver's ed to keep me out of trouble that summer.

I made a living driving most of my adult life. 18-wheelers and taxicab.

7. Good luck!
I haven't driven in 7 years~same situation as you, living in a major city with excellent public transportation and my husband does the driving in our car.

I hope you meet your goal and become a licensed driver by the end of the year. :hi:

10. I got my license late too
I didn't think I ever would get it. You'll quickly find that you're way less anxious when in control of the wheel as opposed to when your (reckless?) friends are in control. Good luck!
