Someone tell me what is supposed to be wrong with Candlestick Park.
Today I went to my first 49ers game since moving to SF. I picked up a MUNI bus at Union Square which dropped me off at the stadium and then back when it was over. The stadium itself looked perfectly fine and my seats were comfortable enough for a sporting event. Yeah it was wind, but so what? If you can afford a ticket, you can afford a jacket or sweatshirt. Besides, it's not like we're in Green Bay. There is a point at which stadia need be replaced. Tiger Stadium in Detroit was about to collapse when they shut it down. But Candlestick Park looked just fine. So what am I missing?

2. I was totally happy when the 49ers played at Kezar Stadium

The was was a fun place in my mind, and the last time I attended a live 49er game. We didn't need no stinking luxury boxes back in those days, plus they still allowed us to haul in cooler. Coolers, what were they thinking?

The Oakland Raiders played the Los Angeles Chargers at Candlestick Park in 1960 while the 49ers were still playing at Kezar Stadium. Note the park was still open in the outfields.

4. The proportion of stands that sell good beer to stands that sell massmarket pisswater is horrid.
Other than that, there's the wind issue (it's a serious factor in games, w/o it that Lambs three pointer would have probably been good today for example,) the roll-outs, the sections that can't be sold for football because of the obstructed view from the roll-outs... Oh and it's seriously ugly and in the ghetto which I think is really the biggest complaint when it comes down to it, because there's not enough parking and nobody really wants to park in Bayview, much less pay somebody to do so.

As a practical matter, most of the fanbase comes from either in the valley or down the peninsula, so having a stadium somewhere where the game wouldn't clog up bridge traffic any worse than it already is would kind of convenient for pretty much everybody. Either that or a site more accessible by transit- directly on BART like the Coliseum would be best in the long term.

FWIW, we might have been on the same bus. My family's had season tickets since I was a bitty thing, I think I spent half of my childhood freezing my ass off in section 3.

5. I don't even own a car
So traffic and parking are non-issues for me. I actually felt spoiled (I was in section 25, next to the cheerleaders).

8. It got its reputation from baseball
Candlestick was a notoriously awful stadium for baseball, especially with the winds that turned foul balls to first base into doubles down the left field line.

9. In today's NFL climate, your stadium has to have tons of luxury seating.
Candlestick just doesn't have that or any of the other bells and whistles that new NFL stadiums do.

Structurally, I'm not sure. It survived the 1989 quake with 60,000 fans in the seats, although accounts were that the place was shaking pretty bad.

11. Well if Dallas is an example
the 49ers might want to think twice. I'm reading that parking at the new Cowboys stadium is a nightmare and the only thing the place has going for it is the huge digital screen.

12. far better for football than it was for baseball.
SF in March and April is so bloody windy, Chicago might just lose its title! (But it already lost the Olympics, let's not wish anything more on it!) So for the opening games in spring, Candlestick just sucked. However, football season usually has great weather here. The rains don't usually start till February and since the Niners will NEVER be in the Superbowl again (ah, 1982. We still miss ya) there's nothing to worry about.

It is a bit seedy tho. But I liked Kezar as well, and that place was a total dive.
