Albert Bierstadt (dialup warning)
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 05:00 PM by pokerfan
Been watching 'The National Parks' by Ken Burns all afternoon. I understand that the 'Hudson River School' style is not without its detractors but I love it.

'The Falls of St. Anthony'

'Among the Sierra Nevada'

'Lake Tahoe'

'Looking Down Yosemite Valley'

2. It's a good series too, if you didn't see it
My goal is to visit every national park. I've seen most every one in the west. Heck, my own state has three of them.

3. My first visit ever to an art museum
was to the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma with a school club. The painting there that most captured my attention was Bierstadt's "Sierra Nevada Morning". Absolutely breathtaking to see it in person.

4. Those are beautiful. Detractors be damned.

I've managed to miss the entire series.:-( I love Burns' work, so I'll probably catch on re-airing or dvd.

6. These guys were basically the Kincaides of their day
We drove all the way to DC to see a Thomas Cole exhibit at the Cochoran, and there was a large painting of Niagra Falls.

As we approached it, I said to my SO "I bet that site didn't look that good even back when Cole was there" and damned if there wasn't a little plaque next to the painting saying that he REALLY cleaned it up and romanticized it - that the Falls had already been commercialized and there was already a lemonade stand on the promontory he painted.

But romanticized or not, I love them, Cole and all the rest: Church, Durand, Beirstadt, the whole Hudson-Valley gang.
