I'm sitting here thinking how times have changed regarding children at school...

Two examples:

1) Our 5th grade teacher was a short man, probably 5 feet tall. He used to play full court basketball games with us 5th graders in the gym during recess. For 5th grade, these games were pretty competitive. After one game, the teacher called me aside and said "he had a bone to pick with me". I had no idea what that meant, so I said "what"? He started screaming...YOU BROKE MY GLASSES DURING THE GAME!! I had no idea that I did that, and I told him I was sorry. He grabbed me by the shoulders and slammed me against the wall about 10 times.

2) We were playing whiffle ball inside the gym one time. The gym teacher, Mr. D, was behind the plate, calling balls and strikes. One of the better players struck out. He was grumbling about it as we walked into the locker room. He said he would not have struck out if Mr. D knew how to call balls and strikes. Well, Mr. D was behind him, heard this, and started SLAPPING THE SHIT OUT OF HIM in the locker room. Made his face all red. Mr. D then told him...now go home and tell your parents that you sassed a teacher.

This was in the 1960's. Can you imagine this shit happening today? It would be lawyer city...

3. I think I was swatted at least 20 times...
Until I told the Asst Principal in my High School that sure he could swat me, but he should be careful of that over-sized vertebrae in my back that could be pushed into my spine if he swatted me wrong...

I was a smart ass for sure...

5. How awful!
I had some mean teachers too, in the 1950s. In 7th grade, if a kid was caught chewing gum in civics class, our teacher would make them take off their shoes and stick their wad of gum on the bulletin board at the height where they could touch their gum with their noses by standing on tiptoe. Once they were standing there on tiptoes with their noses on their gum wads, the teacher put thumb tacks, points up, under their heels. The kids had to stay that way until the end of class, or until their heels bled from puncture wounds.

10. I can remember the first and second grade teachers still had wooden paddles. This was
back in the mid-70s.
