2. Law enforcement was very sloppy in Tombstone during those times
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 02:18 PM by JonLP24
However Earp was just a temporary and unpaid deputy with no badge who tried to provoke Tom McLaury into a gun fight the night before the OK Corral by pistol whipping him but McLaury wouldn't draw. I believe it is unclear whether McLaury had a gun that night.

This is my favorite example of how the law was enforced that you can find at the Boothill Cemetery.

12. Eh, I think it's more complicated than that.
I wouldn't paint the Clantons or McLaurys as innocents in everything that went down -- but neither would I say the Earps were the steely defenders of justice they're made out to be. I think the closest modern comparison to what went down at the OK Corral would be a gang war. It was a fight between rural criminals and townie criminals.

15. I wasn't saying that at all
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 02:57 PM by JonLP24
The one thing about Tom McLaury was his gun was deposited a half block away during the fight in which he was killed by shotgun blast from Doc Holliday. I think the main issue was the gun carrying law and the OK Corral was a place you could have your gun either on your way to deposit or on your way outta town.

But you're right they weren't innocents as much as the Earps weren't steely defenders as well. It wasn't my intention to mislead but it's certainly a different story then what is being told through Hollywood movies.

16. That's for sure.
Hell, the Earps are only one small example of the Old West tendency of police officers to transition to criminals, and vice versa. The most egregious example might be Henry Brown:

But there's loads of others. (Old West history's something of a hobby of mine.)

17. I am interested to learn more about the old west in general
The thing was I was into was Arizona history and the old west version of it was by far the most fascinating. A very good book is Arizona:A Cavalcade of History by Marshall Trimble.

Thanks for the link.

18. A good starting point is Bill O'Neal's Encyclopedia of Western Gunfighters.
It's a bit hagiographic, but also incredibly inclusive. Some 250 biographies, and writeups on many of the famous shoot outs.

The Encyclopedia of Western Lawmen and Outlaws is even more comprehensive -- something like 1,000 entries -- but it's also even more romanticized and downright wrong in places:

Happy reading!

I'll have to check to see if the city library has the books. If not I may purchase them sometime later. Thanks again.

6. That's Wyatt Earp. His last name is not a bodily function.
Excuse yourself.

7. I did excuse myself. You just couldn't hear it.
And "talking" is a bodily function.

Since I've never heard word one from the mods about burping being a bodily function, I'm quite sure that the spirit of the rule refers to what most people consider to be a bodily function, without twisting it into every act that a body can possibly perform.

I've seen a million "fart" threads in here that were not deleted.

I've also seen a few hundred threads with the word "sex" in them, without the thread being considered a sex thread.

So probably, people making a huge deal over the word "burp" have another agenda.
