Poll question: Quentin Tarantino or The Coen Brothers?
It's on. It is on like Donkey Kong.

Whose films do you enjoy more?

1. Funny, when I first saw the trailer for 'Inglourious Basterds' I thought it was a Coen Bros movie.
So Tarantino is learning something.

3. Agreed, but I've at least enjoyed some Coen bros. movies
And Tarantino's fan club is WAY more obnoxious.

"You just don't GET him!"

Oh, I "get" him. I just don't LIKE him. As if it is utterly impossible for one to simultaneously understand the nature of what Tarantino's trying to do and dislike his films.

4. The biggest thing they have in common is that they are both cinephile nerds
that like to cram their movies with as many homages to older films as they can possibly fit.

But the Coens have much better taste in the movies they quote.

There are a bunch of other reasons I like them better, but that just seems like the closest point of comparison.

5. Coen brothers movies tend to have a point beyond merely showcasing that
they are the Coen brothers.

Tarantino movies always seem like a commercial for Quentin Tarantino. In my opinion, of course.

7. I like both a lot, but the Coen brothers are pretty much in a league of their own, imo.

9. Tarantino.
I can't name a Coen Brothers movie though I'd probably recognize some titles if someone were to mention them.

10. You might recognize them from such films as
Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, Fargo, Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men.

He's the most over-rated talentless hack ever.

13. Ah, ok I've heard of most of those.
Raising Arizona and Big Lebowski were good. I never heard of Miller's Crossing or Barton Fink. Haven't seen Fargo or No Country. I've heard No Country for Old Men was really up my alley though. I'll have to TIVo it.

Still, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are really tough to beat, those movies are great.

14. Seriously......
Put "Pulp Fiction" up against "The Big Lebowski" and see witch one you walk away from thinking.

I don't mind Tarantino, but he is nothing special. Just another guy who watched too many action flicks and has a hard on for blood.

There are groups that can help people like that.........

22. Thinking what?
They are both up there on my favorite movies list, but I wouldn't really classify The Big Lebowski as "deeper" than Pulp Fiction. Now No Country I could see.

Still, as a movie goer either name gets my ass in the theater.

15. I love Quentin, but come on - not even a choice really - Coen Bros all the way
Their movies are deeper, smarter, funnier, and just all around better. And I say this as Pulp Fiction is one of my top 10 movies of all time so no disrespect to Quentin.

Best movie ever -->

16. barton fink.
great movie. great. the coen brothers movies are among the few that i have watched more than once. (so many movies, so little time.) there is always something new. heck, some of them you have to watch more than once just to figure them out.
but barton fink is a must for anyone who makes their living in a creative pursuit.

19. I have never been able to sit through a Tarantino film.
On the other hand, the Coens have a wonderful sense of humor, purely dry, that fits my own to a T.

27. ten or (definitely) twelve years ago I would have said Tarantino
but now I'd definitely pick the Coens.

I'm still really looking forward to seeing Inglorious Basterds, though.

28. Neither.
I would've chosen the Coen Brothers until No Country For Old Men, one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. I "don't get" Tarantino, so I won't go there either.

For total Ouvre the Coen brothers would win... However, they have yet to do THE masterpiece...

30. Both brilliant, both make films that are as much commentary as story, both you have to "get"
and most of the people who say "I get them I just don't like them" don't get them. Not all (so you can feel like you're the exception if you say that. I don't feel like arguing.).

I like the Coens better, because they make films that appeal to my tastes more. Tarentino is brilliant, though, so it's not a runaway choice. Usually when I'm trying to explain one of them to someone I wind up invoking the other. It's a natural comparison, and both are in a league that they created and no one else really belongs in.

And "No Country For Old Men" marks a new height for the Coens. Not necessarily my favorite to watch, but one of the best made films I've seen. Up there with "Unforgiven," "Million Dollar Baby," and a handful of other perfect films. Tarantino hasn't done that yet.

while the last QT film I watched (and liked) was 'Jackie Brown'. :-)
