24. Boy that went over my head, but it was educational. In my defense, I don't read fiction except of

course over in the E&E forum, when, um, certain people, like the guy who named himself after a piece of fruit, write stuff.

There's a great science fiction story told and retold over there, where, for instance, the capital of Pennsylvania is wiped out by a huge invisible monster who also eats Kiev.

Of course, every time I read that particular fiction, I tell myself I should just give up fiction.

21. Is "The Lottery" still required reading in California schools?

I know my kids had to read it, but they've always taken Honors English and Literature. I remember when I had to read The Lottery back in the days when we all expected to be incinerated by nuclear bombs while cowering under our desks with our butts facing the windows.

I was not happy, not at all.

I had to go away and come back again.
And to think I used to refer to this story all the time!
I used to be very active in a local community association that had some pretty grand pretentions about itself and unfortunately couldn't ever really live up to its ideals. (Lots of nasty backbiting, personal attacks, ego trips and pure unadulterated self righteous stupidity would often get in the way of good work. ) Whenever anybody asked me "What's it like, being involved in the Community Association?" I would respond by telling them to read Shirley Jackson's short story The Lottery, it would tell them all they needed to know.
