24. Gorgeous creature! Beautiful name!
I'm not a cat person, but I fell in love with a Maine Coon several years ago while visiting friends. The cat slept with me and started following me around first thing in the morning when I went to brush my teeth. I turned the water on, and he jumped up on the sink and started lapping the water from the spigot like a dog! His name was Jasper. There will be a day when I'll adopt a cat, and there's no doubt in my mind what sort of cat that will be!

Incidentally, I have a dear friend who names her dogs after Shakespearean characters. So far there have been Ariel, Robin, Portia, and Feste.

Even though he's huge he's very gentle. He is very paternal and loves to play "foster dad" to the foster kittens that I've looked after:

26. The breed is thought to have it's roots 400 years ago in Maine, where
long haired ships cats from Norway and Turkish Angora cats from Europe (which were all the rage then) bred with "cats of the forest". The "cats of the forest" would have been bobcats and lynx, obviously. For a long time Maine Coon breeders tried to deny that they had any wild blood, but DNA testing shows markers for both wild species. They "trill" like wild cats and have the same large size, lynx tipped ears and heavy bone structure, but that's where the similarities end. They're very gentle. I'd trust Oberon with a small child, unlike most of the other cats I've owned over the years.

54. Oberon had a "romance" with a young raccoon for a couple of years
he's an indoor only cat, but she would visit him from the windowsill or back door every evening. He would paw wildly at the back door until I would open it and they would sniff each other, nuzzling their noses in one another's fur. She didn't come around one evening and on my way to the post office the next day I found her, just a block away lying dead at the side of the road. We still miss her around here!

46. I had a Maine Coon mix a few years ago. Remember Sylvester?
He was my big coonlet who tipped the scales at 18 lbs. (he was a bit overweight), but his ideal weight was 16. He also "trilled" (I call it a "murp" because that's what it sounds like). He was technically my cat, but in reality, he took to my mom--neither is longer with us. :(

51. That's interesting
Maine Coon cats are the generic barn cat in New England. Their large size and shaggy coat makes them impervious to the harsh winters there.

I've always wondered about those lynx tips on the ears. The Maine Coon kitty I have now has those, the shoulder ruff, and the enormous tail, although she's pretty small for the breed, 13 pounds.

There's no surprise that there's ample wild cat blood in them, along with Norwegian forest cat and the tamer house cat varieties that came over. Like the rest of the mutts out there, they got the best of all breeds.

We had a cat who was part Maine coon, lynx-like tufts on her ears, wild looking and acting. She lived to be 22.

(Apologies to Oberon, afraid Ruby (my pony) pushed him off the board above.)

One of my most beloved kitties of all time was rejected by his mother (he was a runt) and had to be bottle fed. He was the cat that changed me from a "dogs only" person to someone who now has four of them and has raised countless fosters. I hope that Missy and Mu give you many, many wonderful years of companionship!

61. Well, this is Missy and Mu's aunt, Marble.
She is my son's kitty, and she was named because she looks like a marble cake.

Marble is fiercely connected to my son. She sleeps with him every night, stays in his room during the day, and when he comes home from work or school, she is right by his side. The look she gives my son's GF are priceless, as we call it the 'why don't you just go the fuck away' look.

She, and every kitty in our house save one, are related to each other, and were all ferals we took in. They are the happiest bunch of kitties one could ever hope to see.
