For example, if I'm on some random web page and decide to check in on DU, I type "ctrl+t" to create a new tab, then type "d" (the awesome bar is already selected from the previous action) to bring up DU from the recently visited list and then use the down arrow to select it and hit enter. To close a tab, simply type "ctrl+w." To navigate (scroll through) tabs, type ctrl+pgup/pgdn.
To keep things running fast, I've reduced my history to keep only sites I've visited in the last ten days. Too many items in your history file will slow down any browser. If it's a site I want to revisit I bookmark it so I can find it through the awesome bar. I don't even bother organizing my bookmarks, I just start typing into the awesome bar until it shows up.
Another cool trick is that you can have more than just one start page. I have nine myself. Get all your tabs looking the way you want them to when you start up then go to the options menu where you would normally set your home page and select 'use current pages.'
This is a great
Firefox tutorial for those new to Firefox.
And here are some extensions I recommend:
*
Adblock Plus (blocks advertising, banners and other crap)
*
Flashblock (stops Flash content from loading automatically)
*
NoScript (blocks malicious scripts from running automatically)
*
Download Helper (to download videos to your hard drive -- YouTube doesn't necessarily keep them forever)
*
DownThemAll (with a single click download all the links or images contained in a web page)
*
FEBE (backup your entire Firefox profile - extensions, bookmarks, passwords, cookies)
*
HideFindBar (hides the find bar after you're done with it)
*
HideMenuBar (hides the menu bar until you need it)
*
ImageZoom (lets you zoom/shrink images independently of text - I mostly use it to shrink the occasional ginormous image that makes a forum wider than my monitor)
*
PearlCrescentPageSaver (lets you capture an image of an entire web page, not just what's visible on the monitor)
*
QuoteURLText (let's you copy selected text to the clipboard including the page title, url and date with just one click - useful for posting a link to a forum or email)
*
SnapLinksPlus (lets you open multiple links in new tabs by drawing a box around them)
*
TabCounter (adds a counter showing how many tabs you have open to the tool bar of your choice - right now I hav e twenty open)
