2. Ski trip to Steamboat Springs, Colorado
I entered a sweepstakes drawing at a local Atlanta radio station. And my name was picked. So I won airline tickets and accommodations for two people in Steamboat Springs. The only thing is that I don't ski, but there was plenty else to do.

4. back in high school, I won a small TV
we had one of those fund raisers to raise money for our class and I barely sold over the minimum to qualify for the TV and I won it. It was a little B&W TV with a built in radio as well. However, it was nice to use for late at night, and also in my dorm room in college.

8. Year's supply of M&Ms
I entered an on-line contest. Of course, they arrived during the hottest spell of the summer. The USPS couldn't deliver the package, but left a note. I went to pick it up on lunch hour and had to have help bringing the box into the office A/C. 365 little packages of M&Ms - LOL - surprised me, for sure.

10. I won a $100.00 gift certificate from the Cerritos Mall.
Back in 1979 or '80. One of my friends put my name in. I didn't have to be there to win (and I wasn't). I just got a call one day to come pick up my hundred bucks. I bought a pair of white pants at Chess King for about twenty-five bucks. They gave me the change in cash. I went and bought some sticky weed with the rest. All-in-all an excellent weekend.

I won a drawing for a book from TCM. I think I took a movie trivia quiz first, and then they drew a winner from participants in the quiz.

I won a bicycle helmet at a recent trivia fundraiser (I wore it throughout the remainder of the trivia night - it was fun). :)

14. Nintendo Wii
Employee contest sponsored by a vendor. My husband was very excited.

I also won some circus tickets as a teen. The happy feeling of winning does not stay long when the circus is an outdoor one in February. It was OK. The best part was getting hot cocoa at grandma's house afterwards.

Series! Actually they have really good food, but it was a little odd for us to win that particular prize. It was a raffle at the Tucson Folk Festival a few years ago. We were going for a guitar.

I won some cool looking throw pillows last year. We had let the local Morgan Horse association have permission to do a big trail ride on the private property. They invited us up for dinner and had a small club raffle - I think they saw me looking at them and made sure I won them as a sort of thankyou, but maybe I really did win. Don't usually, that is for sure.

20. An Easy-Bake oven
When I was about 8 or 9. I don't remember how - I think it was a cereal box contest.

I won a cell phone on a radio call-in contest once (whose apartment was Mama Cass in when she died?). It was one of those huge, clunky Motorola phones that had a battery that lasted about 3 minutes.

And I won a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant in a work contest once.

Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 12:40 PM by hyphenate
$640, $1600, $500 (twice), $100

Slot machines, and bingo. Vegas.

My SIL recently won $1000 on a poker machine, getting a royal flush.

Forgot: more money--$1400, when the SuperLotto plus was first running. We got 5 out of six numbers, and were pissed at the small amount we got. It changed not long after that, which awarded a parimutuel prize. If we had won about three months later, it would have been a six figure award. We used it well--Mom and I used it to pay off the B&Bs in England and Scotland on our trip.

26. MVP of my slow-pitch softball team
The captain had the players do a secret ballot after we finished 1st place regualar season and won the playoffs. He said it was nearly unanimous for me, which was quite an honor given the fact that I was 42 at the time.

I'm still playing on my regular park district teams, but now at 51 I'm also on a Senior (50+ AAA division) team that plays weekend tournaments. I just got back from Gallatin (near Nashville) where we won a berth to the Senior Softball Tournament of Champions this winter in Florida.

Couple hundred bucks from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts in their Short Story category. Looking back on it now, that story is TERRIBLE. But I guess it was good for a 17-year-old.

My dad would have a more-interesting answer to this: He's won two cars in his life.

34. trip to the rock and roll hall of fame
I was calling in to request a song, and while dialing (and almost done), I heard the DJ say they'd take the first caller, blah blah. I did not even know what I was trying to win, but was entered into the drawing. Then they drew my name (and made fun of it on the air when they could not pronounce it, naturally), and I won the trip.

What's funny is, I lived in Columbus, OH at the time. The HoF is in Cleveland. They flew me up, which took longer than driving, and the tax on the trip ended up costing me a couple hundred dollars. It was fun, but I could have gone up there for less.

35. Howard Dean's necktie - really!
I always participated in the St. Johnsbury,VT yearly Kiwanis Auction. In 2000, Howard Dean was in town and helping out when I started bidding on a power drill. Howard Dean offered his tie to the highest bidder... in good fun, I think I bid upwards of $90.00 and won the tie... I kept it around for a year or two and then threw it away one day in a cleaning frenzy. Wish I had kept it.

36. I 'won'(?) a title: "King of Glen Iris School", with bought votes.
Circa 1952.
My grammar school (Glen Iris) needed (or just 'wanted'?) new water fountains.
Some bright(?) person decided to hold an election for King and Queen of the school.
And you voted with...MONEY!
'Donations' for the new fountains.
Votes were a penny apiece.
Talk about subverting the voting system at an early age.

Anyway, I was a 'child of a broken home'.
Poor me. :-(
My parents had divorced when I was 4, and mom and I lived with her parents.
I guess grandpa decided I needed an ego boost as the poor waif of a single mom  so my suspicions (unconfirmed, but I'm sure that's what happened) are that grandpa 'bought' the election for me.

Soooo...I was the King and Shirley Ferguson (WHY can I still remember her name?) was the Queen.

My mother, who dabbled in college and amateur theatrics designed and sewed our costumes. I have a photo of the King and Queen and the Court (runnersup).
Maybe if I can figure out how my new printer-fax-copier-scanner-toaster-coffemaker works I can post it.

43. Tickets to see Rush!
It was finals week of my senior year in high school. I won tickets on a radio contest for a Wed. night concert. Me and a buddy went, and both scored terrible scores on our music final exam the next day due to residual deafness from the show. The music teacher gave us good final grades anyway out of amusement (hey, he was retiring and we were graduating - why not?) Let's see, I think that was their Roll the Bones tour.
