Toilet problem. Snake & plunger not making a difference. Water from sink going to toilet.

1. Buy a longer snake

Tree roots in the lateral lines would be my guess.

It's a shitty problem regardless.

You can rent a longer snake. Even if the snake doesn't solve your problem it might help you figure out approximately where it is.

3. Usually the city sewer runs under the street

If your neighbors don't have problems it's probably the line that runs from your house to the sewer main, which is usually your responsibility. It could possibly be something flushed down your toilet that's still in the lines that run through your house and that will probably be the cheapest fix. One time my kids flushed some paper towels down the toilet and it backed everything up until I got a snake long enough to get to it. If it's farther down the line you may have much bigger issues. Some types of trees and shrubs can extend roots for fairly long distances to get into the lateral lines. If that's your problem I truly feel for you as you can wind up digging for several feet before you even get to the lines and once you get there you will literally be in deep shit. Having problems like that fixed professionally gets quite expensive also.

6. it's not my house, it's actually at hubbie's job

his boss should have called a plumber and hasn't yet and everyone has been going to the store next door to use their bathroom all day today. So hubbie got fed up and came home to get the snake and try it himself. He can't get the snake through because of the shape of the toilet. He thinks at this point either the toilet is going to have to come out, or the sink.

5. Clogged sewer line downstream

Any outside drain clean-outs? Might need to pull the toilet to run a real snake down. You sink sound fine. Any standing water in the tub or shower pan?

7. it's not at my house, but that was what I had thought of too

it's at hubbie's work. We've had so much rain (record amounts) this summer that it wouldn't surprise me if there is a line clogged up somewhere. But none of the surrounding buildings are having a problem.
