8. I change my pronunciation each time, since I've heard it pretty much every of those ways
and no one seems able to actually agree on how to pronounce it, not even the Greeks.

:)

Also, I changed my mind... it's gotta be yeer-oh. The root word starts with a y I think, so... that makes more sense. Whatever you call them they're one of the best sandwiches ever IMO. But... are they techincally a sandwich?

30. Ha! What do you know!
Everyone knows that 'gyro' is pronounced 'Fred'.

And since there is only one 'Q' in 'Fred', it is always annunciated.

34. Wait, we might both be wrong.
In this case, by "gyro", did the OP mean "autogyro"??? If so, then we're both wrong and it's actually pronounced "farfoofle". Damn, I'm embarassed I didn't realize this sooner.

19. YAIR-oh
In college we'd order gyros with cheese fries and the Greek guy on the other end of the phone would always repeat..."Yairo-cheese fry?" We wrote a song about it and everything. Unforuntately the master tape was lost and it's gone forever. Shame it would have been up there with Stairway to Heaven and Free Bird :(

Doner Kebab as corrected earlier.

Basically Gyro is Greek, Doner Kebab is Turkish.

26. *SHUDDER* I'm Greek and I hate it when I hear GEAR-oh or JYE-ro. YEE-ro. It's YEE-ro.
I don't see why there must be an argument though. There is a correct way to pronounce words and it just needs to be clarified, especially foreign words. Once that's done, it's a matter of just pronouncing it correctly.

29. This is one of those regional things.
The "right way" to pronounce it in New York (yee-roh) is different from the "right way" to pronounce it in Chicago (gee-roh).

35. wrong - the right way is the one that the person of Greek heritage gave just above.
starts w/ a "Y" sound, NEVER a hard "g".
Like the word "year" w/ an "o" on the end. Or maybe kind of half-way between that and "yee-ro" -- the long "ee" sound is softened a bit, I believe.

And I first encountered them in Chicago, FWIW, and knew the right way to pronounce from the get-go.

43. The different pronunciations are because that "g" is a sound English doesn't have.
In modern Greek the letter Gamma is pronounced like the German "ch" except that it is voiced.
