My friend is having a baby! But she's having issues with an item...
on her wishlist.

http://www.drugstore.com/qxp209217_333181_sespider/philips_avent/iq24_electric_steam_sterilizer.htm

She does not want anything that is sterilized in the microwave, but this item has gotten some pretty harsh reviews. Has anyone seen a good quality steam sterilizer that she might look at?

1. Does Evenflo still make them? I had one, but gave up on it pretty quickly
It was easier to boil water in a big ole pot, and just "dunk" things:)

Lazy mom here:)

dropped pacifier:

1st baby..sterilize immediately
2nd baby, wash it off under running water
3rd baby..pick the cat hair off and hand it back

4. LOL! I remember when my sister had her first child, she had everyone wash their hands
before touching her, she sterilized everything immediately, etc. Then she had her second child and was like "Oh, she's getting into the dog food again..ah well, I buy organic dog food."

11. i think all parents are that way
didn't seem to hurt babies #2 and 3 any, either.

In fact, "baby" #3 is healthy as a horse - probably healthier than the other two.

2. I didn't check you link, but
the microwave sterilizer that I have works fabulous. The only thing it says on it is "Especially For Baby". It was passed down to me from a family member.

If she'd rather not use a microwave one, it only takes ten minutes to sterilize on the stove, which is what I used to do before I got the microwave one. I'd just do all of my stuff (bottles, nipples & binkies) all at once. But since I BF'd I didn't go through that many bottles.

5. I had one by avent like that, but found sterilizing on the stove easier.
I had my twins 20 months after my first born. Dumping everything in a big pot of boiling water was much easier and quicker than fooling around with a serilizer thingy like that. I had a crap load of bottles and pacifiers, so glad those days are over.

8. people still sterilize?
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 01:32 PM by tigereye
What plastic bottles we used (breastfed mostly -no scary out-gassing bottles) we washed in the dishwasher. We only had one kid, though. I never really worried that much about "germs" per se, other than standard washing of various things. Exposure to some normal germs and dirt builds better immune systems, don't they? My son was hardly ever sick until he got to kindergarten, other than periodic colds from daycare.

My mom used to sterilize bottles on the stove in a bit pot when we were kids.

9. We didn't even have a dishwasher.
Everything in our house got washed by hand. Some level of cleanliness is a positive, too much is not, from what I've read.

12. I was surprised when my grandchildren were born and their mothers
were told that washing bottles in hot soapy water was all they needed to do. They didn't even have to boil the water they used to mix formula. That was a far cry from what we were told when my babies were born.

I sure wasn't going to steam or microwave my tits. The kid came out fine.
