I hated Farrah Fawcett.
Edited on Thu Jun-25-09 03:27 PM by Dangerously Amused

I hated her because her popularity peaked just as I was becoming interested in boys. I hated her because every guy in my age bracket drooled over her and had that one iconic poster on their bedroom wall... for years. I hated her because she "set the standard" for beauty among young women in my age group, and she was everything I wasn't: tall, skinny, blond, clear-skinned with a dazzling smile, glamorous and popular. I hated her, and I hated me.

Then as life went on I watched her struggle... with her career, her marriage, her family... and eventually her own body. It was interesting to me in a removed sort of way to find that perfect people had problems, too. It helped that she was honest about the difficulties that life threw her way, instead of always fighting to maintain the facade as so many celebrities do. Over time she gained my respect for that.

Today my middle-aged heart made peace with a woman who unwittingly dominated my teenage years and wreaked havoc on my self image; today I mourned a woman I once used to hate with all the rancor a teenage heart can muster.

Life is funny that way.

2. The ability to come to terms with one's old nemesis, be she unwitting or not,
and then to move on is most admirable. In all probability the person who made your life hell never actually existed. I was married to a woman who knew FF in college; her take was that FF was actually a pretty nice person, given that she was something of a campus princess at a very large school with all the constant ego gratification that this implies.

FF got big a year or two after I graduated from law school, so I never did the FF poster thing. I dated a couple of women who, in retrospect, were clearly were trying to model themselves after her, but soon found them to be shallow and uninteresting. I quickly looked elsewhere. And, frankly, at that point in my life I found intelligent redheads and brunettes to be far more attractive than a wannabe blonde whatever-it-was-that-women-then-thought-FF-was (to coin a phrase).

In any event, congratulations on your growth as a person. Adolescence is hell for us all, in one way or another. Congratulations, too, to us all for surviving it.

5. I was always more attracted to Kate.
No grave dancing here.
I only hope she went peaceful and I wish the best for her grieving loved ones.

7. Me too
Farrah and Jaclyn just seemed a little too plastic.

I mean c'mon, those eyes! And clearly the brains of the outfit.

9. My dad bought that poster for my brother
only my brother was barely 10. Dad really got that poster and put it up in my bro's room so Mom wouldn't get mad, lol.

10. You mean Ferret Face? That was our nickname for her
I hated her hair - the damned layered cut that never looked as good as her hair even straight out of the beauty salon.

What I did admire about her is how she moved her career beyond the sex object/pinup to a real serious actress who could real depth into her roles.
