I found my tribe.

In the end, online searches and the forum at celiac.com were for naught. My dad saw a notice on the bulletin board at the Senior Center for a gluten-free picnic and told me about it. My sister whipped out her Blackberry and ran all the same searches I had run already, even insisting that I call the numbers that were identified on the celiac.com thread three years ago as disconnected. (Guess what? They were still disconnected.) I just told her it seemed a lot simpler to me to go over to the Senior Center and copy the information from the flier. So I did, and called the lady at the Central SC Celiac Sprue Association. I'm going to the picnic 6/14; presumably, I can find out about further meetings at that time. I feel-- released.

3. Might be the other way around, actually; I'm very, very good at that stuff
The picnic, as it happens, is at a park down the road from a Bi-Lo which has a mysteriously extensive gluten-free section. (Bi-Los aren't too bad, but aren't usually very good either; I generally refer to them as Sel-Hi). I have a shrewd notion that the lady I talked to (who is also a national board-member of the CSA) might have something to do with that. I'll definitely ask her, and thank her if she's the one who's responsible.

2. Good luck
It's tough to be gluten free. I'm glad you found a support network.

4. Thanks, I'm finding it a blast, actually...
except for that whole "not being able to eat in 98% of restaurants" thing.:P But it's nice to feel less alone.
