Like James Bond, seriously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUQbmFAE5WI

This looks EXACTLY like a show like South Park might show as a parody as an "update" to a classic.

Well I'll say at least it appears Robert Downey Jr. is doing a great job playing his character. The question is if that character should be Sherlock Holmes.

2. Well, they made James Bond into James Bond, so why not Sherlock Holmes?
Flemming's novels aren't much like the movies, either. I'm noticing a trend here.

4. Well in this modern demoraphic....
one vice (opium) just wouldn't make an impact. he also had to be a womanizing brawler. The sound of one hand weeping.......

17. The womanizing bit is ridiculous. But in the books, SH was an expert boxer and fencer.
So, I don't really have much of a problem with that part.

6. Hehehehehe. It does look amusing, though.
It's a Guy Ritchie movie, apparently, so that explains THAT.

It's also not like it's meant to be taken seriously. None of his movies are.

22. i knew it had a high camp factor in the trailer
when i saw a character running down a tunnel firing a heavy-assed German MG42 rambo-style (unless he was firing at air, i promise he would never hit what he was aiming at)...that was more than eyeroll-worthy

31. Well Kill Bill didn't exactly have realistic action sequences either
His movies are supposed to be campy and over the top. It's quite obvious this isn't intended to be Saving Private Ryan.

8. So, apparently the writers and director have never read nor respect any Sherlock Holmes stories.
It's gonna be another Star Trek remake - an abomination of the worst order.

12. man, london is BORing. They should change it so that Sherlock & Watson are buddy cops
And set it someplace coolio like Monte Carlo or Miama and let 'em pack Uzis, coz Uzis rock nads, and none of this "oh bloody me, i dew believe i've found a cleuw tew the muuuhduuh most fowl, old bean" but give 'em like good catch phrases like "eat THAT shit, mutherfucker" whenever they shoot the drug dealers and throw their goons out the 60th floor of the casino--shit like that, man, that's a Sherlock Holmes I could fuckin' watch--but change that bullshit name from Sherlock to something cooler, like Spike or Dragonfist. Yeah!

High action, low consequence. Glad Guy Ritchie got this out of the way so he can work on the next "RocknRolla" installment.

I like Robert Downey Jr. but I don't have high hopes for him getting the character right.

Ironically, Watson was the one who scored with women in the SH stories.

19. Yeah. Conan Doyle married him off a little too quickly for it to be a long-term subplot but...
Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 10:15 AM by SteppingRazor
in the first few stories, he's always after the ladies, and even after marriage, he's always courteous to women to a fault. Contrast that with Holmes, who finds the stereotypical swooning female of Victorian England to be an annoyance more than anything else. Besides, the dude was too ripped on blow to do much with women ;)

27. You guys are more fundamentalist than James Dobson's prayer circle.
Guy Ritchie is using Steampunk as well as the graphic novel-to-movie trend to create a different Sherlock Holmes. Art is always evolving and transforming and adapting to modern times. Even the mighty Arthur Conan-Doyle was accused of ripping off older influences to create Sherlock Holmes, including Dupin from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

If you follow the culture-neocons around here all movies would be made silent and in black and white, and have Latin captions.

I did read all of ACD's Sherlock Holmes stories as a kid, but I'm not a purist.
