The Last House on the Left (1972, Wes Craven)...
i watched it again tonight.

was that the greatest movie you ever saw at a drive in?

(and i know you saw it at a drive in, if you saw it.) movies like that didn't show in respectable movie houses.

we would stuff 2 to 4 folks in the trunk of the car and only have the driver pay. once elevated onto the dirt "bump" they provided for our viewing pleasure, and with everyone out of the trunk and into their car seats, you could hook up that one shitty speaker for all to enjoy.

imax? 5.1 dolby? special effects? fuck that.

greasy popcorn and scary movies and love was what we got at the drive in.

i know y'all think your viewing experience is so much better now than ours was then.

it wasn't...

1. We still have at least one drive-in theater here in the Dayton, Ohio area
I haven't been to one since I was a child, though. I do remember going there and the greasy 20 gallon tub of popcorn my dad would get for the whole family to share.

2. We used to stuff people in the trunk, too.
I don't know why. We could have afforded to pay.

There is still a drive-in here. It's fun to go once in awhile.

3. There's a drive-in not far from here, but things have changed.
They charge by the car now, not the number of people. They got rid of the squawk boxes about 15 years ago and replaced them with short-range FM broadcast so you listen on the car stereo.

The one we went to in NH had two screens and a lot of times the kids' movie was on one screen and the adult movie (as in PG-13/R) was on the other. I parked the wagon in between and the kids sat on chairs behind the car with a boom box while we watched the other movie through the front of the car. Worked well!
