American Idol Reaction Thread... (SPOILERS INSIDE)
My opinion: America fucked up...

But that's ok. Adam will dominate.

52. I thought Adam did a little better
All Kris really had to do was perform about as good as Adam (or better) and he would win. Kris has broader appeal which is what I think pushed him over the finish line.

68. Adam's descent down that staircase in that coat was a bad idea..
Edited on Wed May-20-09 09:40 PM by Kahuna
It was too "theatrical." It's like he was a participant in "Broadway Idol," instead of American Idol. His last trip down the staircase ended him in the bottom two. I don't know why it would work this time.

Adam doesn't have any warmth to his voice whatsoever. Technically he can hit high notes all night long but lacks personality and originality in his voice. He could have won the rock star show hands down....

142. I thought Adam would win, but I never counted Kris out
I knew he was becoming more popular and yet flying under the radar. He must have gotten many of Danny supporters' votes. I also knew the producers might not want controversy, so if there is manipulation on the show, we'd see it here.

Only thing I'm happy about is that Danny didn't win. Kris is ok; he had some solid performances mid-season and then got on the bland side again near the end. I'm sure Kris is a nice person.

64. This played into part of it
The entire time they acted like Lambert had won the competition and that Allen should be so happy just to make it to the finals. This had to piss a lot of people off, and they like to play spoiler.

Also, Gokey had a lot of fans who had to decide where they placed their loyalty, and Gokey's style isn't the ultra-pop goofiness that Lambert portrays.

119. No...the real culprit is dialidol.com that lets the teens
vote hundreds if not thousands of times for their favorite. The "fundies" probably had little or no effect on the results. Voting once or twice for your favorite is pretty much a waste of time, so I don't bother anymore. I say this as an Idol viewer since season 1. What's ruined the integrity of Idol is the power dialing systems (and unlimited texting).

That being said, a lot of people genuinely preferred Kris' style and one shouldn't assume that a Kris fan is homophobic.

65. Adam will do just fine!
And that's one of the things that is just fine, for me, about this show.

Maybe he didn't win (hasn't aired here yet... but I think I get it) but his talent is out there. He WILL get a recording contract because his talent deserves it.

Maybe he didn't get the golden "title" but he WILL make a living at making music. Something he might not have been able to do without the show.

So it's all good.

And. I totally enjoyed the pairings tonight. Idols/Stars. Thought they were very good mixes.

99. Yeah, but what does the title really matter
if you end up with a recording contract after the deal?

Somebody gets a gold star by their name.... but someone with true talent (Adam) will do just fine because he's received the exposure he needed to be heard and recognized.

A chance he might not have had without the show.

I'll watch again next season.

But the title seems to have less influence each year.. and it seems America just doesn't pick good Idols anymore (3 in a row I haven't agreed with) and/or the producers influence it. I figure that after the show, I'll know about the true talent anyway. :hi:

42. Kris is a babe, but Adam has a better voice.
Remember that the biggest voting bloc is young teenaged girls, so it really shouldn't be a surprise that Kris won.

The thing is, winning American Idol means they get to control your career for a year. I actually think its better to be in Adam's position. Maximum visibility, and he is free to start doing his own thing tomorrow.

Good on both of them.

54. This was the first year I have ever watched the show. We all voted for Kris.
Though Adam had the better voice it was just a matter of style. He seemed to only have one gear. Falsetto ballads, even if that wasn't what the song was. For us it came down to the fact that we didn't think we would want to listen to a whole album of Adam but would of Kris. That said, in tonight's show Adam showed more of a range and , ironically, if we had to vote based on tonight we would have voted for Adam. Adam will get a record deal no matter what though so he'll be fine.

56. Hardly
The better singer last night won the competition. It's that simple. And when Lambert learns that screeching like a cat caught in a blender is not singing, which he will when he can get some professional handlers around him when he starts his solo career, he'll be fine. And Allen, as his voice matures, will only get better.

180. I disagree with you.
I have lived in San Diego for 27 years, and it is the south. It is warm and humid. It is very conservative, even though it is a big city and the city core is liberal, the county as a whole is deeply conservative and the city and county are run by an old-boys network, based on the entrenched money interests rather than the public interest. Quite a few of them live in my neighborhood. San Diego is different from Los Angeles and worlds away from San Francisco. San Diego is very much The South and is more akin to Dallas, Phoenix, Houston, etc.

America does not want a homosexual to win the title as the American Idol.

Adam could not have possibly been better. His talent surpassed everyone in the competition. He was...hands down the best performer the show has EVER seen.

His only problem was that he was born "different...???".

I'm a straight woman. I have a family full of children who are straight but none of them could hold a candle to the talent this man has. To deny him the right to win this honor is just wrong.

Kelly Clarkson is (and was) so far above Lambert in terms of both range and pipes that it's a ridiculous comparison to make.

Both Aiken and Studdard had performances that were vastly superior to anything Lambert ever did on the show.

Nobody denied him the right to win. He didn't win because he didn't get the support, which is the name of the game and has been since the program's inception, and he didn't get the support because he's vastly overrated by some.

60. I feel sick. Ugh. I don't normally watch AI and I don't really like the "talent" AI produces, but
Adam really caught my attention this year with his uniqueness and vocal ability. The fact that he would have been the first openly gay AI winner was the cherry on top. And, oddly, even though I don't really care for the AI machine, I think it would have been cool to have it working for Adam and helping him with continued mainstream exposure. Otherwise, I can see the homophobic radio industry, for example, brushing him off as too niche and out of the mainstream. As the winner of AI it would have been a lot harder to ignore him. Finally, if he had won AI, the positive message that would have sent to gay teens struggling out there would have been a good thing.

69. Kris needs the title more than Adam.
Without it, he would have been lost in the shuffle post-Idol. Both will get signed by 19E as all final 2 contestants do, and because the producers wanted Adam to win, his album will get as much promotion as Kris’s (see Daugherty, Chris and Aiken, Clay). If Adam had won, Kris would have been as forgotten as the past runner-ups. I thought Adam deserved to win, but Kris is a nice guy, so I can't hate on him.

73. America did NOT vote. Kris was chosen by the corporate American Idol machine.
There was no way in hell that the stiff suits behind AI were going to allow some "controversial" flamboyant gay male to be their frontperson. The first album has already been written, they wanted some radio-friendly wholesome kid with boyish good looks to be their singer. This is the reason why so many people fucking hate American Idol - it's not about choosing the best singer, it's all about image. I really feel like Taylor Hicks was a fluke - after that, the AI producers knew they had to tighten their grip in order to not allow someone who didn't quite fit their mold to win.

online to see the homophobic vitriol being spewed at Adam. On another forum, it was reported that a previous year's contestant named Mandisa was on some LA news show earlier today and she said that all her "Christian" friends were voting for Kris. A poster on another site also reported that he was watching his local news tonight and the anchor said that the guy's guy won AI. In my mind, this was another battle in the culture war and we lost this round.

130. DUers got Obama elected didn't they? I think DU is a lot more influential
than some want to admit...which is why so many people come on here and try to control the dialogue and load the place down with disinfo and bullshit.

Oh well, I shouldn't be surprised, the nutcases will never quit trying to control this country and everyone in it that's for damn sure. :puke:

got Obama elected.

134. There were a helluva lot of people participating here during the lead up to the election.
To me, it felt like DU had been invaded by a hundred thousand or more. :yoiks:

Plus, lots of people read DU and never ever post.

If DU were a inconsequential website there would not be so much bullshit, disinfo and so many people trying to control the dialogue.

135. 10 million more vote? Really? Interesting. Of course you can vote as many times as you like, so...
whether that translates into actual support when Kris's CD is released remains to be seen. I've always found it funny how there's so much hype surrounding AI and so many millions of votes for the winner, but only a couple of winners have gone on to be true superstars.

156. I'll admit (with shame)
Edited on Thu May-21-09 01:14 AM by fujiyama
that I actually kept up with the show off and on this season. I also thought Adam deserved it. Kris really sounded so generic like a million other artists on the top 20 that get played a million times on crapola terrestrial FM stations.

Adam was definitely unique and I think it's sort of naive to believe homophobia had nothing to do with him not making it. Otherwise, why would those nutcase fundies go to the extent they were in opposing him? Even O'Reilly got into the game. It was irritating though to hear that hack Ryan Seacrest making this a cultural war before the show started last night. But of course, that kind of controversy gets better ratings. I don't think either contestant deserved to be stuck dealing with such red state vs. blue state nonsense.

However, it's worth mentioning that people can vote multiple times so Kris would probably have appealed to those demographics that really get into this (ie teenage girls). And of course, Adam was the judges' favorite all along and that probably didn't really do him any favors.

Also, considering the previous seasons indication of success for the winner vs. the runner up, Adam certainly has nothing to worry about. I think he'll be around. He's got a unique vocal talent and stage presence.

159. Why the shame? I readily admit to being hooked on the show this year.
And it's all because of Adam Lambert.

177. I don't know.....
.....I think while there were people who may have voted for Allen (and against Lambert) on the basis of Lambert's orientation, there may have been just as many people who voted for Lambert strictly on the basis of his orientation who may have not voted otherwise. The two sides could have cancelled each other out.

In the end, Lambert may not have been as palitable to AI's core audience as Allen was. Nothing to do with orientation, everything to do with singing style and presentation.

123. I agree! I turned off the TV after the announcement, I was so disgusted.
Last week when I saw the hometown crowd for Kris was made up of 12-year-old girls, I knew he was probably going to win. That's the group that is willing to sit for 4 hours hitting "redial" over and over again. Older kids and adults have better things to do.

Once again, the "cute" wins over talent. Feh. I'm done with Idol until they fix the voting system.

I think Adam has a great career ahead of him but he really deserved this win. Maybe there was some kind of backlash because for the past several weeks you could tell he was being favored.

125. I don't think Adam lost because he might be gay/bi but because it was a vote against the judges pet
Edited on Wed May-20-09 10:53 PM by book_worm
First of all AI's demographics are dominated by younger more inclusive people who (I don't believe) might vote against Adam because of his sexuality. It also hasn't been an issue on the show and except for a few right wing hacks it hasn't been an issue in the mainstream media. I think he lost because it was a vote against the judges favorite. I think people like to vote for the underdog. Adam is more talented, but Kris came across as a nice guy. Also, everybody expected Adam to win so maybe his fan base didn't turn out?

128. I think it was the tween girls voting for the Tiger Beat guy
Do they still have Tiger Beat? I'm dating myself. Anyway judging from the fans in the home visits AI's a craze with little girls, and they went for the one they found the cutest. I really don't think there were enough idealogues voting to turn the tide of 10M votes. I could be wrong.

136. I liked both Adam and Kris equally.
They are both talented, but they are also two very different artists. I hope they both put out a good CD although my hopes aren't too high considering that it is 19evil. Regardless I think that both will have long careers.

Kris has been gaining momentum for weeks, so it's not surprising that he won. I honestly don't think that the Christian crazies care that much about a TV show to hit redial for four hours.

Adam had been pimped by the judges throughout the season and while he is talented, I think that there may have been a bit of a backlash. Which is unfair to Adam because it isn't his fault.

149. Dance is performance..and it is stunning
I have seen some of the best choreography - ever - in contemporary dance on this show. This isn't Big Brother. No scripts but choreography done by some of the best in the business by some performers who have been training for many years for the chance to showcase their skills. I don't think this can be lumped in with The Two Coreys.

181. American Idol, the concept of it
is a good idea, imo. I say this only because I feel it is so hard to break into the music business, or the movie business (either as an actor or a director), and when a show helps people break into the field of their dreams, I think it's a good idea.

Who knows, maybe some of these people would've broke into the business on their own, maybe not, but the exposure they got on the show helped them fulfill their dreams, and I think that is a good thing.

Yes, some are not really that talented, but the ones who are seem to make it on their own, even after the exposure from the show wears off.

I do think the show is overrated and overhyped, the judges are useless, the host (Ryan) is a waste, but overall I think if it can help a person live out their dream, it's not all that bad.

Edited on Thu May-21-09 09:03 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
He basically was a professional singer already through his work in musicals. He had an interesting voice but came off too pretentious and self-indulgent for my taste. He'll get an album though, and might have a good career.

Kris was boring, but if the idea of the show is to have someone who is completely an amateur win, better he win.

I lost interest halfway through the Top 12 after everyone I could see myself rooting for was kicked off.

I can still say that the only Idol contestant I really enjoyed and rooted for was Taylor Hicks. He was just a lot of fun to watch. Unfortunately, gray haired guys singing old-fashioned soul songs don't play well to a Top 40 audience, and I knew that the moment he won, so the fact he's done squat since Idol isn't a shocker to me. I still liked the guy.
