I adored Freddie...my grandson, 6 years old, watches the Queen videos
with me and he thinks Freddie is really a Superhero...

4. I can see Adam being a lot like Freddie.
I see similarities in their style. And both are unbelievable singers.

5. I believe I agree. Whomever wrote those songs was very gifted.
If you have ever seen the chords for a song like "Killer Queen," they are so sophisticated and difficult, it really does merit one's admiration.

I can play the songs of almost any band I love, but I've never been able to play (very well) the work of Queen.

I just read where Mercury wrote 10 out of the 17 songs on their greatest hits album!

9. LOL, I should have done that too. Sorry.
I agree, though, Queen had some amazing qualities that no other band I can even think of has had.

Great topic! Thank you.

10. Here you go!
Songwriter
Mercury wrote ten out of the seventeen songs on Queen's Greatest Hits album: "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Seven Seas of Rhye", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy", "We Are the Champions", "Bicycle Race", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Play the Game".

The most notable aspect of his songwriting involved the wide range of genres that he used, which included, among other styles, rockabilly, progressive rock, heavy metal and disco. As he explained in a 1986 interview, "I hate doing the same thing again and again and again. I like to see what's happening now in music, film and theater and incorporate all of those things."<22> Compared to many popular songwriters, Mercury also tended to write musically complex material. For example, "Bohemian Rhapsody" is acyclic in structure and comprises dozens of chords.<23><24> "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", on the other hand, contains only a few chords. Despite the fact that Mercury often wrote very intricate harmonies, he also claimed that he could barely read music.<25> He wrote most of his songs on the piano and used a wide variety of different key signatures.<23>

17. The arrangement that the band had was that whoever wrote the lyrics...
received songwriting credit.
This was suggested by Mercury. No surprise there. I'm only surprised that the rest of the band fell for that agreement.

12. He is on American Idol. He does have some pipes on him.
Not Freddie yet, but with lots time and a great band, it is possible.

16. That he was, and he had a LOT of prodigies around him
Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.

I'll never forget an interview I heard with Brian many years ago
in which he said "The entire band was quite shocked when Freddie
brought a woman into the studio".

OMG, to have been a fly on the wall in that studio!

:)

18. Mr. Mercury was also a hell of a composer and musician
One of the most unique voices ever.

When they held the tribute concert in his honor in 1992, it was somewhat satisfying to see the male singers struggling with their inability to match Freddy's style & vocal range.

The only singer who came close was Annie Lennox:

19. He was also a pretentious, preening, pompous poser
Who makes Bono look meek and humble in comparison.

Most overrated singer in rock history.

21. I largely agree, Zomby.
My interest in Queen peaked at Queen II and was pretty well entombed by the time "Killer Queen" was a hit. I will more than readily grant their technical facility, Roy Thomas Baker's stunning production and the brilliance of Brian May's guitar playing, but if I wanted to listen to Liza Minnelli/Judy Garland style theatrics, I would have listened to them, not FM. Just not my thing; WAAY too campy, but for those who enjoy, fine.

22. I also remember when they were a functioning band, and critically...
they were dismissed as a silly ridiculous over-the-top act with VERY STRONG FASCIST TENDENCIES.
They sold a lot of records then, but so did Foghat and Bad Company.
They have only achieved their current "greatness" status in the wake of Mercury's tragic demise.
Just as history gets revised, so does pop history.
Me? When it came to silly ridiculous over-the-top acts, I preferred The Sweet.
