What is so great about coffee?
I have tried it before and I don't really care for it. The only thing I have ever used coffee for is dipping chocolate chip cookies in it.

1. I don't care for it either... but then again, i'm a PTC 'taster'
We did a statistical experiment in my biology lab, and discovered that I and about 1/3 of my classmates could taste the substance PTC (phenylthiocarbamide), while the other 2/3s (including Lyric) could not. To a 'taster', PTC is outrageously bitter; to those who have no receptors for it, there is no reaction at all, except to look at those around them who are reacting like they are nuts.

Some further reading revealed that people who can indeed taste PTC are also generally less likely to be tobacco users, or to drink coffee or unsweetened tea. Bitter flavors of any sort are exaggerated to PTC tasters, it seems.

13. I must be in the 1/3 group, too
because no matter how yummiliciscously it's brewed, it still tastes bitter and like drinking puddle mud. Thus, why if I want the caffeine fix, I have to drink coffee-flavored cream and sugar, to cover up the bitterness ;)

Black teas bother me, too, either from the bitterness or the tannins upsetting my stomach. I love herbal teas, however, especially some of the ayuervedic ones :D

15. My tea has to be 'hummingbird tea' for me to drink it...
About 2 cups of sugar per gallon. :9

Caffeine fixes usually involve Pepsi or Mountain Dew.

17. Unless I've had a bad night and almost no sleep, my standard fix
is Dr Pepper :D

I love root beer, but hate the fact that it doesn't have any caffeine in it. Oh well, I love it for the flavor anyway :9

Ever had a good chai? I've got a recipe around here somewhere if you want to make 2 gallons of something deliciously drinkable and caffeine-fixing ;)

Which should be a prosecutable offense.

40. Although I am guilty of drinking some of the big name brands
I usually go for some of the ones I can find in Whole Foods, or off brands and old brands like Hires :)

Seems like I had found a place once that had Dad's Root Beer, but I don't recall where that was now...

43. My favorite is Sprecher's. That's what I drink at home,
but some restaurants have Barq's. It's owned by Pepsi, I think. Maybe Coke. Anyway, root beer is my preferred drink at night, when I'm trying to avoid caffeine. I've learned to ask about brand names.

And it's a great brand when you can find it :D

I believe Barq's is owned by Coke, and Pepsi has Mug.

Here's a site that lists all the brand names - http://rootbeer.net/RootBeerBrands.html

53. I've never done the PTC test, but I love bitter foods, so I guess I don't taste it.
And I LOVE my coffee. I'm craving another cup right now, but resisting the urge because if I have caffeine this late at night I won't sleep.

2. Don't know why I like it, just do
For some reason it's taken the place of alcohol in my daily life. Now instead of it being hard to get up in the morning, it's hard to get to sleep at night.

29. Beer tastes sour to me.
I don't really like the taste of any alcoholic beverage. Back in my party days I drank Cuervo with a coke back, the shooter got the nasty part out of the way.

On sane evenings I'd have several cokes between shots.

I don't really enjoy the effect of alcohol, I'm more of a marijuana personality.

A perfectly roasted yemeni coffee bean, used in a french press with real cream added is frankly the most divine food item in the entire world, bar nothing.

Edited on Tue May-19-09 01:26 PM by pokerfan
It allows you to control the brewing time rather than just leaving it to the whims of gravity. I am this ->|<- close to roasting my own beans. I only drink a couple a couple of cups a day but in my world, a cup is 16 oz.

"Over second and third cups flow matters of high finance, high state, common gossip and low comedy. Coffee is a social binder, a warmer of tongues, a soberer of minds, a stimulant of wit, a foiler of sleep if you want it so. From roadside mugs to the classic demi-tasse, it is the perfect democrat."

18. I didn't start drinking it until I was 25.
I had a job at Borders that started at 6:15 am. The barista would fire up the cafe' americanos and I was good to go all shift. I tried to stick to tea, but they used their tea filters for all the flavors of tea...so the tea ended up being an undrinkable mess. I still love coffee. I'm drinking the last of some Kona from Hawaii right now.

19. I hear you. I'm 40 and still haven't acquired a taste for it.

My friend is a coffee snob and as a "gift to him" I let him make me a cup of coffee (espresso, capacino, mochalate, whatever) and I drink it dutifully, but never enjoy it. Too much nasty taste for little stimulant effect. I prefer strong tea (hot or iced).

Yerba mate is a nice jolt.

20. If you buy a cup of coffee, you're licensed to sit in a coffee bar for twohours. Order an iced tea-
and they expect you to chug it down and be gone in 15 mins.

Drinking hot beverages slows life down.

I bought their product, so I get to consume it however fast or slowly I choose, not the other way around.

And how often do you see people getting an ice-tea to go that are in the utmost hurry versus the same getting a coffee to go? ;)

30. I didn't like coffee till I worked in a diner when I was 26. Before that I used
coke if I wanted a caffeine buzz. Now coffee is my favorite thing.

36. These are all the reasons I drink tea.
Plus, it actually tastes good.

37. The best thing about it is that they can't force me to drink it.
I'll admit that when I'm falling asleep on long drives I can drink the cold frappacuno mocha sugar shakes they sell in bottles in travel centers, but that's only if I force it past my gag reflexes. Other than that, it can't possibly taste the same to other people as it does to me, or they couldn't drink it either.

41. It's one of the greatest pleasures of life
Edited on Tue May-19-09 12:45 PM by Sugarcoated
but definitely an acquired taste. My 27 yr old daughter hates it, my 15 yr old son loves it. My husband drinks it for the caffine and could care less what it tastes like. Me, on the other hand, while pretty low maintenance in most areas of my life, am quite the coffee snob, and my husband makes sure to stop at my favorite cafe for a sit down or a cup-to-go when we go anywhere, if there's time. He's a prince. :loveya:

Some observations and factoids:

It's legalized speed that tastes good.
It makes me crave chocolate for some reason.
And it's even got many health benefits!
Sumatra is my fav along with the dude who started Starbucks.
My brother calls it the "black gold" and his mug his "chalice".

42. It's got to have milk and lots of sugar...
...or as my best friend says about my version of coffee, "Some coffee with your sugar." It's an energizer and a definite mood elevator.

49. Y'know what I love about it, Charles?
I can get up early on a Saturday morning, while Mrs. V. sleeps, and take my cup of hot coffee out onto the front porch and enjoy the start of the day. I could do that with a Coke or a glass of orange juice or water, but it wouldn't be any good. It's coffee that rounds out the picture of quiet thankfulness for another day.

Boy, does that sound cheesy. :eyes:

52. It makes getting out of bed tolerable.
I so savor my morning routine. I am spoiled by a partner more devoted to proper espresso making than myself, which means I get to greet every day with a lovely Americano to go with my toast and OJ. It doesn't get any better than that. Actually, the best is Sunday mornings, a gorgeous coffee, sitting on the front porch in the sun and my slippers, doing the NY Times crossword. That, my friends, is bliss, pure and simple!
