I went to see him on Cinco de Mayo in San Diego. Bear with me.
A childhood friend of mine, a wonderful person named Richard, passed on March 22nd after battling colon and liver cancer. I posted about it here, and got many wonderful replies.
A little about Richard: He was Sammy Hagar's biggest fan. For the last 16 years of his short life (47 years, 5 days), he never failed to attend Hagar's Birthday Bash in Cabo San Lucas. He even bought two timeshares there over the last 5 years to guarantee that he, as well as us, could go and have a guaranteed place to stay. This last October, 12 of us went, as we knew between us it would probably be Richard's last trip. As has happened in the past, Hagar came by our table, saw Richard, and said hello. That always made Richard feel ten feet tall.
After Richard passed, I got in touch with some of Hagar's people through his Club 1013 website, and made mention of Richard's passing. I made it clear that we'd be there on Tuesday, and it would be the first Hagar concert anywhere in So. Cal. that Richard would miss.
Richard considered himself somewhat of a tequila expert, and Hagar's Cabo Wabo tequila was his favorite. In fact, when we spread Richard's ashes in the Pacific Ocean near the end of the summer, his ashes will have been transported from my sister's house to the yacht we've chartered in empty Cabo Wabo bottles from his collection of empties. I mentioned that as well.
So Tuesday night we're kinda down in our drinks over the whole ordeal of the last few months, when Sammy Hagar begins Richard's favorite song with a shout out to him. By the time it was over, there were six of us, and a few other guests we didn't know, with tears in our eyes. Tears of happiness and joy that Richard got a shout from his hero. Afterward, we were asked backstage, and got autographs and other neat stuff. We had a photo of Richard and Sammy in Cabo taken in October, and Sammy signed it. He's also sending me a bottle of his private bottling of Cabo Wabo tequila. We went to the concert with heavy hearts, and left walking on air.
Props to you Mr. Hagar, you are a class act.
