Women are taught to be ashamed of most normal bodily functions.

Someone posted this in a thread yesterday. This is certainly true in our society.

Why do you think that is so?

1. When I eat beans and pork with beer, I'm ashamed, let me tell you.
Ashamed and oddly proud.

13. A great one, isn't it? The head of Hepburn's fan club in the UK used it on her
when she refused him an autograph on the street.

I think that might be when Tracy almost punched the guy.

4. women are always supposed to be "delicate" and "feminine",
and apparently gas and explosive diarrhea just don't fit those categories. And of course, any mention of biological functions related to your icky lady parts is always taboo.

15. I know more and more women who cringe at the word 'feminine' because it now means
'passive' or 'delicate'. I hate the word.

5. The source is the misogyny that pervades this culture.
The more ashamed you are, the easier you are to control.

7. This reminds me of a Mother Jones quote:
"No matter what the fight, don't be ladylike! God almighty made women and the Rockefeller gang of thieves made the ladies."

8. Well, I know that we're supposed to consider
our pelvic area dirty... we're supposed to douche, and use special wipes, and feminine hygiene sprays, and sanitary napkins that have deodorant, and just over all,.... that whole area is just dirty.

That's what the TV commercials say, anyway.

14. Screw that.
I use soap, water, and overall good hygiene. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and hygiene takes care of the exterior genitalia. All that other crap just increases the risk of infection down there. I've only had that happen once in my life (after being on antibiotics for a month--see what happens when you kill the beneficial bacteria down there?) and I am NOT going through that again for the sake of having a crotch that smells like a perfume shop.

Clean is good enough for me.

:hi:

9. Personally, I think human bodies are pretty disgusting.
Way worse than any animal. So what if it's "natural", it's still gross.

20. For me it changed after childbirth.
There is nothing quite like having a few strangers put their hands on your cervix to change how you feel about body functions--especially in front of your partner. Between that and having one boob flopped out for a year or so while nursing that baby, I really am not too worried about closing the bathroom door anymore.

I DO, however still embrace the use of Mercy Flushes and Glade. That is just common courtesy, I feel.
