Scientific name: Diospyros kaki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shibui

In Brazil, it's enormously popular and called "caqui," but for what I see elsewhere, that name is used for another, different fruit.

1. I thought that was called a parsimmon.

But now I have to go look. I'll be right back.

PS: Actually, it's most often called a persimmon, with an "e".

PPS: We call something else "kaki." Not anything you'd want to eat. :o

5. Fuyu persimmon, AKA "the kind you can eat before it turns mushy"
Edited on Wed May-06-09 05:28 PM by Gormy Cuss
Some persimmons have a horrid flavor until they're over-ripe. In CA the rounder ones are usually Fuyus, the more heart shaped ones are Hachiyas. Hachiyas are awful until they're as soft as pudding.

7. Fuyus are great
Eat them like an apple, slice them for salads or you can dry them.
