The end is nigh...
My teenage son cleaned his room; and I didn't ask, threaten, or bellow.

2. What does he want?
It's usually what I ask my siblings when they do something like that. Because ultimately they do it because they want something.

10. Oddly enough,
nothing. He wanted to spend a weekend with his brother (my stepson) away from home; but I'd agreed to that a couple of weeks ago.

He's only 17. I didn't expect this until he was around 25 or so. :-)

3. Jeez, this makes me laugh.
Thanks. :) It reminded me of what I would think when my son spontaneously would clean his room-I would think that hell froze over.

6. I'll play, uh, angel's advocate
Maybe he's just growing up. I was a teenage slob until I woke up one morning and decided that wasn't how I wanted to live the rest of my life. Now my house is neat as a pin.

Maybe he's growing up.

13. I think you might be right...
He's always been a "late-bloomer" type of kid. I wouldn't have expected this for another 3 years at least! :D

8. He's expecting visitors?
Three guesses:
He's noticed that it doesn't give a good impression to (potential) girlfriends
He's lost something valuable
He's trying to find the dead skunk that makes the place smell so bad ...

14. The girlfriends element is a possibility.
Or maybe he's starting to feel guilty for torturing his parents for so many years. ;-)

17. Betcha that the laundry basket suddenly filled up though!
(Tends to happen in the Nihil household when kids are asked to tidy up
their clothes ... :-))

18. It did...but in a surprising fashion
My son has invested heavily in "Goth" apparel for the last couple of years. What I found in the laundry were regular jeans and flannel shirts.

What's up with that?

19. Social archaeology ...
It would appear (from examination of the "spoil site") that a number
of intriguing objects have been retrieved from the ongoing dig in your
son's bedroom.

This is known as a "marker layer" - i.e., a point in the strata of
the site which contains artifacts of known age, an age obtained by
correlation with other (more certain) sites.

Unless the site has been disturbed recently, there is a very good
chance that items below this layer are older than the marker and
those above the layer are more recent.

Bear in mind that there is always the chance of outside contamination.
In the case of a Viking burial mound, this might include items of booty
stolen on raids. In the case of your son's room, it might include items
of clothing left behind by visitors or "captured" by accident due to
hurried re-packing after a sleep-over ... :-)
